HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF TANZANIA BUILDING AGENCY

BACKGROUND

The Tanzania Building Agency, ( TBA ) was launched in the year

2002 as part of public service Reform Program (psrp) and in
accordance with the executive agency act No.1997. The main
objectives of this transformation is to provide quality and affordable
accommodation to the government and public servant thought
efficient and effective Real Estate, consultancy and business services.

ESTABLISHMENT

The Tanzania Building Agency ( TBA ) was established under

section 3(l) of the executive Agency Act No. 30 of 1997 and became
operational on 17 May 2002. The Tanzania Building Agency operates
as semi-autonomous executive Agency under the ministry of works,
Transport and communications. The public expects considerable
improvement in construction and rehabilitation of government
buildings with respect to quality efficiency and cost effectiveness.

4
VISSION

To be center of excellence for provision of accommodation to the

government and public servants.

MISSION

To provide sustainable and affordable accommodation to the

government and public servants through efficient and effective
consultancy service, real estimates investment and management .

VALUES

In pursuit of its mission, Tanzania Building Agency ( TBA ) is guided

by the following values ;

I. Social responsibility.
II. Service excellence.
III. Customer care and service.
IV. Professional and ethical conduct.
V. Building and Building safety.
VI. Awareness of HIV/ AIDS pandemic.
VII. Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
VIII. Commitment and team work.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE AND MANAGEMENT OF

TANZANIA BUILDING AGENCY ( TBA ).

DODOMA – REGION

6
7
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY TANZANIA BUILDING AGENCY
( TBA ).
The main role of TBA is to provide accommodation for the
government and public servants as well as building consultancy
service to the government.

Specifically the agency is charge with the following functions;

1) Construction of new government building.
2) Maintenance of new government buildings.
3) Allocation and sale of grade A and B government houses to
public servant.
4) Provision of building and mainteining consultancy service to
the government.
5) Leasing government houses on commercial service / basis.
6) Provision of project management services to ministries,
departments and Agencies.
7) To advice the government on policy and legal matters
pertaining to the building sub sector.

CONCRETE FOR SLAB

INTRODUCTION
Concrete;
Is the chemical reaction between cement and water.
Where by aggregates bind together with sand where sand ac act as
filler materials.
Concrete for slab;

8
Is a concrete that used to make flat and horizontal
members of a building with uniform thickness which extends over
three or more supports in a given direction.
• Commonly ratio used for slab concrete is 1:1.5:3 for grade of
twenty five ( 25 ).
Where by ;
i. 1 stands for one bag of cement.
ii. 1.5 stands for sand ( volume of sand ).
iii. 3 stands for volume of aggregates.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

✓ To improve the building strength and strengthen its life by good
and strong concrete.
✓ To be aware with methods used, hence being able to choose
the economical one according to available fund.

SIGNIFANCES OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is to improve the concrete slab
strength. the strength of the concrete can be controlled, the long life
of the building also can be controlled. Therefore, it easily can
manage the life of the building for make it more safety and in good
strength.

9
METHODOLOGY USED PREPARE AND PLACING OF
CONCRETE FOR SLAB AT SITE.
a) Batching
Is the very first method used at site to prepare concrete
for slab. This is where by components or materials for making
concrete are batched or measured according to the grade suitable
for making concrete. Materials where batched in volume.

Batching

10
b) Mixing
After batching, the materials were mixed in dry condition by
mixed thoroughly with water to attain a good paste. The means
of mixing was mixing machines which where mobile concrete
mixer machine and one bag concrete mixer machine.

c) Transportation and placing of concrete.

The mixed concrete was transported from a mixed area
to the final position by workers using buckets that is the local

11
method of transport at a site. And the concrete was placed on
well cleaned and nailed formworks.

Fresh concrete placing

d) Compaction of concrete.
After placing of concrete, it was compacted to reduce the air
voids that reduces the strength of concrete.

12
This method was carried by vibrator compactor. After
compaction the slab concrete was leveled since the aggregates
used was lighter.

CURING OF CONCRETE FOR SLAB

• After compaction of a slab concrete, the slab concrete was
cured for 28 days to maintain satisfactory moisture and
temperature condition for it to become a proper hardening
concrete and to attain its maximum strength and to prevent
cracks due to shrinkage.
• The concrete slab was cured for 28 days by ponding.
Temporary small amount of sand were provided on slab to
prevent the slab from moisture loss.

13
Slab concrete curing

TEST OF CONCRETE FOR SLAB

• The slab concrete was tested by conducting a cube crushing
strength using compression machine.
• The cube casted in moulds applied with oil for easy separation
of cube.
• The fresh concrete is filled in metallic mould of size (
150mm*150mm*150mm ) in three layers and kept in room
for 24 hours.
• After 24 hours the cubes are removed from the mould and
kept under water for 28 days as the time required for crushing
the concrete slab cubes.

14
• After 28 days the cubes are tested to the compression testing
machine to know the crushing strength of the cubes.

Compressive Machine

15
CONCLUSION
Concrete is good in resisting compression but very weak in resisting
tension. Hence reinforcement is provided in the concrete wherever
tensile stress is expected.
This why slab is termed as R.C.C slab
Its properties are as follows;
1) It doesn’t show excessive deflection.
2) It is a fire resistance
3) It is capable of resisting expected tensile, compressive, bending
and shear forces.

RECOMMENDATION
In order for this concrete slab to function properly it should be
mixed according to its required ratio or proportional grade, properly
compacted and well cured so as a concrete slab can attain its
maximum strength.
