1.2 Background and Overview of the Hosting Company

1.2.1 Brief History of the hosting Company

The Shashemene City Construction Authority is established as a governmental institution under the
Shashemene City Administration in response to the city’s rapid urbanization and increasing demand
for regulated construction activities. As recognized the necessity of creating a dedicated authority to
regulate, coordinate, and guide construction practices in a systematic and professional manner.
Prior to the establishment of the Authority, construction activities were managed by fragmented
municipal offices with limited regulatory power. This situation led to challenges such as project
delays, cost overruns, poor construction quality, and weak enforcement of building standards. To
address these issues, the city administration restructured its institutional framework and formed the
Shashemene City Construction Authority as a regulatory body mandated to oversee all public and
private construction projects within the city.
The Authority was founded on core institutional values of creativity, participation, responsibility,
and accountability. Creativity was emphasized to encourage innovative construction methods and
efficient use of resources. Participation was promoted through collaboration with stakeholders,
including contractors, consultants, community members, and government offices. Responsibility and
accountability became guiding principles to ensure ethical practices, transparency, and strict
adherence to construction laws and regulations.
Shashemene City Construction Authority is to ensure that construction projects within the city are
completed within the expected budget, time, and quality standards. To achieve this, the Authority
introduced standardized procedures for project approval, supervision, inspection, and performance
evaluation, while strictly enforcing construction codes.
the construction industry in Shashemene City would become competitive, efficient, and well-
regulated. This vision aimed to create a construction environment capable of delivering high-quality
infrastructure, attracting investment, and supporting sustainable urban development.
Through its regulatory mandate, institutional values, and strategic vision, the Shashemene City
Construction Authority is envisioned as a key governmental body contributing to orderly urban
growth, improved construction performance, and enhanced public confidence in the city’s

CHAPTER THREE

3. OVERALL BENEFITS GAINED FROM INTERNSHIP

3.1 In terms of Enhancing Practical Skills

Internship program improve practical skills in many aspects. Such as;

 In knowing procedures and techniques of each work and in improving our

work accuracy.
 In problem solving abilities both in site.
 Ability to implement structural and architectural drawings on the ground.
 In improving o u r report preparation skills. Like weekly report,
monthly report and this final internship report.
 Upgrade our knowledge in data collecting and in materials quality control.
 The theoretical lessons helped us to understand the activities easily.
 Inter gives guidelines how construction materials are managed and
controlled in a way that is efficient and wastage reducing. Controlling
construction materials starting from the time it is taken out of store up to
the time it is implemented on the work. quantity works can be mentioned
among such controlling methods.

3.2 In terms of Upgrading Theoretical knowledge

Internship is the way of upgrading theoretical knowledge. Such us;

 Improved our ability of understanding and reading working drawings

 Operating machineries like mixer & vibrator
 Introduced to the production of HCB, spacers & bar bending
 Positioning reinforcement bars according to the design
 Construction of formworks and Casting and curing of concrete

 Location of bar overlaps (i.e. bar overlap is not allowed in the direction
of maximum moment).
 Concrete mix design and material quality control.
 Selection of foundation type, etc.

3.3 In terms of Improving Interpersonal Communication Skills

 To gain knowledge and information from corresponding professionals.

 To see things from many perspectives.
 To strengthen relationship with others by sharing fillings and To avoid
confusions and get better understanding.

From this we understand that good interpersonal communication among site community
results for safe and efficient work. Also increase the speed of work. Therefore to be
effective and efficient in any work we involved speaks in right time and right place is
necessary.

3.4 In terms of Improving Team Playing Skills

 Good work division ability and effective idea explanation ability.

 Punctuality and preparation of work before starting it.
 Creativity and an innovative approach to solving problems.
 Interpersonal sensitivity, influence and the ability to work as part of a team.
 Clear written and oral communication skills.
 Confidence to express anything that we feel. And
 Quick understanding of others feelings.

3.5 In terms of Practicing Leadership Skills

Leadership in a certain construction project is flowing smoothly from group leader

(a person who controls carpenters and daily laborers i.e. supporting the Forman) to
project manager. a nd was trying to act as leader (like group leader, Forman, site

engineer, and supervisor) and we understand that to be a good leader one should fulfill
many qualities. Generally we understand that leadership is not easy rather it needs special
attention, multidimensional thinking ability, good ethical characteristics and even some
experience. Especially good team interaction ability is needed to be a perfect leader.

3.6 In terms Of Understanding Work Ethics and Related Issues

One of the ethical values one finds everywhere in professional career is

punctuality. A worker is said to be punctual not only when he/she comes to work place
on the time but also when he/she meets deadlines and is always available in working
hours. The other professional rule shared by most professionals is the rule of proper
utilization of instruments and labor in a way that one can use the instruments for longer
time.

3.7 In terms of Entrepreneurship Skills

This is one of the main benefits that we got from the internship program because now we
have better understanding than before. Some of the understandings that we have gained
are:- Since we know more about our profession (such as challenges and solutions,
decision making ability, way of business establishment, work management, etc.). we are
able to think to be entrepreneur rather than employer. The main things that we need to be
entrepreneur are deep knowledge about the work that we do good working habit, good
approach to peoples and ability to make final decisions. we believe that we will start from
the minimum and reach to the maximum.

CHAPTER FOUR

4. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Problems Encountered During the Internship Period

4.1.1 Challenges we Have Faced While Performing our Work Task

It is known that one of the main interesting point of the internship program is to face
different challenges that one professional may face during his work, and also the intern
is expected not only to see but also to know and experience the ways how we could
manage and overcome such challenges during the work experience. During the whole
internship period as a practicing employer we have faced some challenges as listed
below:-

First of all it had been difficult to become familiar with the workers of the project since
we had been facing different human behavior.

 At the construction site there weren’t any kinds of reference books or manual that
was used for guiding the intern students without the help of other experienced or
skilled persons.
 The weather condition at the site was also a big challenge for site works (rain).
 The complexity of the project made we confuse.
 Communication challenge. Some words within the site which are commonly used
by the site workers.

4.1.2 Measures we Have Taken In Order To Overcome Those Challenges

According to us every problem and challenge we faced at work has got at least a solution.
Therefore the fallowing solutions were effective for any challenge we faced during
executing our task. These are as follows:-

 we have tried to use our own materials.

 Price adjustment is carried out in order to overcome challenges caused by
inflation.
 The challenges regarding to the complexity of the project we overcome by
reading daily the design and by asking a lot of question to the engineer,
foreman and site workers.
 we try our best to make good approach with all site workers to
communicate within site language.
 duration of time (4month) helps us too familiar with the language and
activities.

4.2 General suggestions to the company

In these four month internship semester we have got the chance to see something that could
affect the company’s quality and hinder its growth and efficiency in satisfying the
requirement of the students at practical internship, but we need to appreciate the company
by their good works. we think they need some recommendations to make suitable
environment to upcoming intern. Some of the recommendation we would like to make for
the hosting company is:-

4.2.1 Recommendation to the company

 The company should give a better attention to rule and regulation of health,
safety and quality before every benefit. Not only for daily workers even for the

foreman and engineers. The site workers have not wear safety shoes, helmet and
clothes.
 Help us to improve our theoretical knowledge.
 The wages of the daily laborers is not enough even compared to other
construction companies. And this drives the daily laborers and carpenters away.
 The company must pay the wages of the daily laborers on time because the
workers haven’t any income for their life.
 Sometimes the way of handling the workers were not good.
 The work coordination between the main organization and site workers must be
strong on sharing the experience, health and safety of the workers.

After we recommendations the company we have appreciation to the company and all
site of the company

 The site has good services on toilet, clean drinking water, and material storage for
the daily workers,
 Good and suitable place where the materials and instruments are stored.
 In our site the site engineer, supervisor, foreman all workers has good approach to
the intern students.
 The foreman has good relationship with the site engineer, daily workers, all
company workers and intern students.
 We have got the chance to visit many sites and we are amazed at the workers
approach.

4.3 Conclusions

The internship program is to enable the intern to experience the practical activities carried out
on site (working environment) and correlate it with the theoretical back ground gained
through learning. Other include if problems exist to identify its cause and take
engineering measures to solve it, to get familiarized to the working environment, to be
governed by the rule and regulation of the employer and to be more of team player.

During the intern in company take part in different activities and also observed different
activities that have been done at that site. In this internship report it is also explained that
we have observed different work that have carried out at the site on different aspects at
different stages by the Engineer and other workers in the site while taking part in the
activities.

The intern gives a good experience from the real world not only academically but also
socially. It wasn’t smooth all the way through the internship there were challenges here
and there including conflicts, delay of materials. All this things are sorted out in the
office and learn,t how to handle this situation without affecting the working environment.
This internship program has helped in every aspect of our knowledge development
process.

In general, Internship is a good idea to equip the student with practical aspects of
engineering. The student will get the knowledge of site what a waits after graduated.
They will not be a stranger to the practical construction world.

4.4 Recommendations
4.4.1 Recommendation to the university

Depending on our work from the beginning to the end we would like to recommended the
following important points to the BHU (civil engineering)

1. The university should arrange some practical visit in some courses before the
intern program if it’s possible from the second year classes. Because it helps the
students to easy understand what they have learn in laboratory and lecture class.
In this internship we saw how it is easy to understand on practical work.
2. Make strict follow up on students by working close relationship with hosting
company
3. Prepare the way of attending students in their four months intern program.

4. The university or head of the department check the advisor how to attend the
weekly or monthly report of the students.
