Quantity Control Facilities

Master title style
• to reduce flows from a developing area
• to remedy a situation where the downstream
drainage system is undersized, and cannot be
enlarged conveniently
• to develop the most cost-effective drainage
system, by reducing the sizes and cost of
downstream pipes and channels, or as long
as this reduces the overall net cost of the
total drainage works

• On-site detention or retention is
provided to reduce the peak discharge
in small storms, up to the minor

• Community detention or retention
should be provided to reduce peak
discharges in major storms, generally
up to 100 year ARI.

– on-line storage : a facility that intercepts
flow directly within a conveyance system.
– off-line storage : the diversion of flow
from a conveyance system into a separate

Community and Regional Detention
(Chapter 20)

Design guideline for the community

and regional detention facilities

46
Community and Regional
Click to editDetention
Master title style
• Community and regional detention
facilities are larger facilities than OSD
which are located in public areas
outside of private properties
• Community and regional detention
facilities should be analysed using a
hydrograph estimation technique and
preferably using a computer model
47
Detention Facilities
Click to edit Master title style
• dry detention - release all the runoff
temporarily detained during a storm.
commonly used for controlling peak
flow
• detention ‘ponds’ - incorporate a
permanent pool of water for water
quality control as well as provision for
the temporary storage and release of
runoff for flood control.

Dry Detention Basin – Worked
Click to edit Example
Master title style
Design a dry detention basin for a 140 hectare catchment, 60% of
which is proposed to be developed for commercial and urban
areas. Flows will be directed to the basin via a grassed floodway
along the alignment of the existing stream. The floodway will
have a low flow pipe system with a maximum capacity of 3.8 m3/s
(0.5 times the 1 month ARI flow) which will bypass the basin and
combine with the basin outflow in the downstream floodway. As
the catchment is undeveloped, ample area is available for the
detention basin to be incorporated into the landuse planning for
the development.

63

Determine design storm criteria for the basin

• Runoff control quantity criteria – to reduce post
development peak flow for the minor and major
system to at least pre-development level
• For medium residential and commercial
development in the catchment used minor and
major systems 5 year ARI and 50 year ARI
