What Is Pneumatics?
The word Pneumatics comes from the Greek word Pneumatikos which
means wind or breathe.
Pneumatics is a section of technology that deals with the study and
application of pressurized gas to produce mechanical motion.
Air is all around us even though we cant see or feel it.
Air presses on our bodies with a great force. We dont feel this because
the air inside our bodies is pushing back equally hard.
1psi 0.06894 bar

History of Pneumatics Applications:
3000 B.C. - Simple Bellows used to start fire.
A.D 1602-1686 German Physicist Otto von Guericke invented a
vacuum pump.
A.D. 1754-1839 Scottish engineer William Murdoch Applied pneumatic
to postal services.
A.D.1826-1896 Alfred Beach experimented on pneumatic subway line.
A.D. 1888 John Dunlop invented tyre.
A.D.1904 First pneumatic subway in New York.

Compressor:
It is a device which is used to increase the pressure of air
or gas by compressing it.
It is the core part of the pneumatic system.
It is required to run various pneumatic tools.

Difference between tool and equipment:

Tools and Equipment's which uses compressed air for their
operation.

What are pneumatic tools and
equipment's?
Tools: Something that help us in our problem situation.
e.g. Screwdriver, hammer, knife etc.
Equipment: Set of tools which are used to perform a
particular job or task.
e.g. welding equipment, mountain climbing equipment etc.
How do pneumatic tools work?
Compressor
compresses air.
Compressed air
supplied to
pneumatic tool
through hoses.
The rotor in the
tool is rotated by
the compressed
air to get desired
motion
Why to use pneumatic tools?

They do not require their separate motor which makes then smaller,
lighter and easier to handle.
Design and construction of these tools is simple and easy.
Free from electric shock and electric hazards.
A large variety of tools an be used on a single compressor.
Makes us able to tackle small household repairs like fixing book shelf,
shoe rack. Hooking a wall painting etc.
Pneumatics VS Hydraulics:
No need of storage.
Air cannot be used at high
pressures as oil, as it is
compressible.
Can be operated at very high
speeds.
In case of failure due to fatigue or
aging the air storage tank will burst
setting projectiles of tank like
grenade.
Need of storage.
Hydraulics can be used at very
high pressures.
Cannot be operated at high
speeds.
In case of failure due to fatigue or
aging the oil storage tank will burst
but without any flying debris
How are pneumatic tools different from
electric tools?
Advantages of pneumatic tools:

Infinite availability of source.
Easy channeled.
Temperature is flexible.
Safe.
Clean.
Reliable.

Disadvantages of pneumatic tools:

Require installation of air producing equipment.
Potential noise.
Easily condense.
Commonly used pneumatic tools :
Applications of pneumatic tools and
equipment:
Paint spraying
Pressure valves.
Musical instruments.
Dental drills.
CNC machines.
Material Handling.
Cleaning.
Machining processes.
