2 Traditional energy in Mongolia

Traditional energy resource in Mongolia

Mongolia is one of the 15 countries of the

world, with large coal reserves. Mongolia
has 162.3 billion tons of coal resources
and preliminary exploration suggest
there are over 20 billion tons in coal
reserves.

The main energy supplier is CHP-4.

CHP-4 is producing energy and heat
since 1983. It got updated 2 times
(1991 and 2014) and covering about
70% of energy demand.
CHP-4 using monthly in average
about:
1,831,094 tons water
344,468 tons coal

3 Renewable energy in Mongolia

Renewable energy resources Solar and

Hydro

Mongolia has about 270-300 sunny days.

An annual average amount of solar energy
is 1400 kWh/m/year with solar intensity of
4.3-4.7 kWh/m per day.

Sainshand Salkhin Park LLC

Business Summit 2015

There are 3800 small and big streams and

rivers in Mongolia and available power
could be 6417.7 MW, which will deliver 56.2
billion kWh per year.

3 Renewable energy in Mongolia

Renewable energy resource Wind

The amount of windy land is about 10% of
the total land area (1,565,000 km2) of the
country.
More than 160,000 km2 of windy land
areas in Mongolia have been estimated to
have good-to excellent wind potential for
utility-scale applications.
This amount of windy land, using
conservative assumptions that result in
about 7 megawatts (MW) of capacity per
km2.
Potentially deliver over 2.5 trillion kilowatthours (kWh) per year.
Good to excellent wind resource equivalent to
1,100,000 MW

3 Renewable energy in Mongolia

Pro and cons of traditional and renewable

Energy in Mongolia
Traditional energy
Pros

Cons

Easier to forecast

Air pollution

Stable energy
production

Limited resource
(despite large coal
reserve)
Raw material cost
(coal, water etc.)

Renewable energy
Pros

Cons

Unlimited resource
(solar and wind)

Difficult to forecast

No air pollution

Not stable (BUT

more RE => stable
energy production)

Optimal in Gobi,
since in Gobi very
difficult to get water
No need of raw
material

Possible course of Asia Super Grid

Generation Mix of 2030 and importing RE from Gobitech

The Gobitec concept represents the idea of producing clean

energy from renewable energy sources in the Gobi Desert and
to deliver the produced energy to regions with a high demand
of electric energy
The delivery of the energy produced is planned to be using
power corridors the planned Asian Super Grid (ASG)
