TRANSFORMATIONS

Grade

(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical

process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and
three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their
properties. The student is expected to:
(A)identify two-dimensionalshapes,includingcircles, triangles,
rectangles,andsquaresas special rectangles;
(D)identify attributes of two-dimensionalshapesusing informal and
formal geometric language interchangeably;
(E)classifyand sort a variety of regular and irregulartwo- and threedimensionalfiguresregardless of orientation or size

Transformation
A transformation is
described as the change
a shape goes through
either when a turn, slide,
flip, or resize

Example of a
transformation:
The picture to the
right shows the
different kinds of
transformation of
some shapes

Translation:
A translation is when a shape is moved
without changing the size or rotation.
All the points in the shape must move
in the same direction and the same
distance

Example of a translation
The yellow triangle is
the original shape
(pre-image). The
blue triangle is the
translation, which all
points were moved
to the right by 6
points.

Reflection:
A reflection is a flip of a shape over a
line, sometimes called the mirror
line. The shape must remain the
same size and shape when it is
reflected. Often shapes are reflected
over the x-axis or y-axis.

Example of a
Reflection:
The yellow triangle is the
original shape. The green
triangle shows that it was
reflected over the x-axis
while remaining the same
size

on.html

Rotation:
A rotation of a shape is done by turning the
shape over a given point and a given degree,
either counterclockwise or clockwise

The yellow triangle is the

original shape. The
purple triangle shows
the rotation made about
the origin of the graph
