At a glance this digipak can be denoted to have a direct link to


the music video Only Girl in the World, which was one of the
many hits of the album. An active audience will be able to
connote the voyeuristic costume remains the same in the two
media platforms. On the front of the album a close up shot is
used, which diverts the audiences eye line to pay attention to her
facial expressions. The artists eyes are looking downwards which
signifies lack of power and being submissive. This conflicts the
hegemonic view of Rihannas star persona of being a party girl. It
is also denoted one of the many tattoos of the artist can be seen
on her neck. Tattoos stereotypically link with the rebellious
attitudes which conflicts the original perception of innocence. The
second image is of the star laying on a bed of roses. More
specifically red roses have a connotation of being the flower of
passion. The colour red, which also can be denoted to be the
artists hair colour, signifies danger, this idea juxtaposes the
previous submissive ideology. The image on the CDs is also roses,
this enables continuity and brings the entire digipak together.
The graphics are all written in white which further emphasises
the ideology of innocence. But this in itself is conflicting as the
name of the album is Loud which sits in hand with the rebellious
persona. The word Loud could be a subliminal message to the
audience that within this album she is making a Loud point or
call of some sort. All of the components are self conflicting which
will leave the audience without ability to judge meaning, in order
to distinguish for themselves the audience will have to purchase
the album, thus, being a marketing technique to make the
