LIVING

PROCESSES
What can living things do?

LIVING THINGS CAN DO

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING
THINGS
Non-living things may be able to do one or two of these
things, but in order to be considered alive organisms need
to do ALL of these.

1. Made of Cells
All living things are made of cells
Some things are multicellular: made of many
cells
Humans, plants, insects, etc.
Some things are unicelluar: made of only one
cell (single celled organisms)
Bacteria

2. Respond to their Environment

Living things can respond to stimuli
Stimuli things that your senses notice
Light, sound, movement, pressure,
balance, etc.

3. Reproduce
Living things can make more of
themselves through reproduction
Some things reproduce on their
own (asexual)
Some things reproduce with other
organisms (sexual

4. Have a Metabolism
Metabolism is what living things use to break
down their food
This includes:
Breathing
Digesting Food
Creating heat and energy
Making waste
Plants can make their own food
(photosynthesis)
Other organisms have to eat their food

5. Grow and Develop

Get bigger
Bodies can change as organism grows older

6. Move
Living things can move!
Is not always obvious movement to change
location
Can be internal muscle movement, etc.
