Diffusion and Osmosis

Notes

What lets things in and out of

the cells?
Cell

Membrane

Diffusion
Molecules move from an area of high
concentration to an area of low
concentration.

Diffusion in our bodies

Two

things our
cells need to
bring into our
bodies: Oxygen
and Food (sugar)
One

thing our
cells need to get
out of our
bodies: Carbon
Dioxide

Which way will the

oxygen molecules move?

Mitochondria need the following

things to produce energy:
Food

in the form of sugar in our

blood
Blood sugar gets to our cells in
the same way oxygen does
Through the blood stream and
then DIFFUSES into the cells

Mitochondria produce a
waste product:
Carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide then diffuses from the
muscle cell to the blood stream.

Osmosis
The diffusion of water

What happens to cells in

different solutions?
Salt

water
organism in
fresh water

Freshwater= 100%
water

Salt =
97%

Salt water = 97%

water
Fresh
=
Freshwater
100%

organism in salt
water

Our kidneys use osmosis

to get water to stay in our
bodies.
