SUMMARY

Materials
Selection
The basic question is how do we
go about selecting a material for a
given part?
Is it by knowing material
properties??
Is it by Material Cost and
Availability??
How do we decide?

Design of an engineering component

involves three interrelated problems:

(i) selecting a material,

(ii) specifying a shape, and
(iii) choosing a manufacturing process.

Manufacturing
We have to actually make it!
This is a key question which has a massive
influence on materials selection.
e.g. The frame, what materials could we
use?

Kinds of Materials

I.

II.

III.

What kind of materials can I use?

Metals
Steel
Strong, stiff, heavy, but cheap
Aluminium
weaker, lighter, more expensive than steel
Composite
strong, stiff, very light, but expensive to
buy and to fabricate

Properties of Materials

As mechanical engineers we are most

concerned with characteristics such as:

Strength
Yield Strength
Ultimate Tensile Strength
Shear Strength
Ductility
Youngs Modulus
Poissons ratio
Hardness

Summary

3.

Think about the design from ergonomic

and functional viewpoint.
Decide on the materials to be used.
Choose a suitable process that is also
economic

Steps 2 & 3 may be iterative.
