ENERGY CRISES & CURRENT

STATUS
A large drop in the supply of energy available.
IN 2015 there was 5500 MW shortfall, generation
was15500MW and the demand was 21000mw.
4,760 MW in 2016 while the country is generating 13,240 MW of
electricity and the current demand is 18,000MW. According to
Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO).
Major cities (Karachi, Lahore) are facing load shedding of 10-12
hours while small cities up to 16-18 hours.
The reason behind the current shortfall is the reduction in the
production of electricity the Independent Power Producers (IPPs)
due to the shortage of oil and gas supply.

TOTAL CAPACITY OF GENERATING

Electricity produced in Pakistan is from three main sources.
ENERGY
1. Hydal
2. Thermal (Gas/Steam/Furnace Oil)
3. Nuclear
Four major power producers in country:
1.
2.
3.
4.

WAPDA (Water & Power Development Authority),

KESC (Karachi Electric Supply Company),
IPPs (Independent Power Producers)
PAEC (Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission)

The total installed capacity currently stands at 25,552MW. In

2017 and 2020, the total installed capacity is likely to reach
26,531MW and 29,131MW.

The energy planning expert group of China-Pakistan

Economic Corridor (CPEC) has forecast electricity
shortfall to further increase to 10,844MW by
2020.While CPEC is accepted to add 10,400 MW to
grid by 2018.
The maximum capability of power plants in Pakistan in
not more than 52%.
Pakistan can generate 100,000 megawatt of
electricity every year for the next 200 years by using
coal report said.
But still Pakistan is producing about 0.8% cause of no

EFFECTS OF ENERGY CRISES

Economic Effect- Growth rate hampered(Low GDP)
Effect on Industry- Closure of Industry
Effect on Social Life- Job opportunities lost
Political ramifications- Declining popularity of the
Government
Low Production
No Foreign Investment
High Electricity Prices
Effect on Education
Death Rate due to heat strokes with no energy.

SOLUTIONS
Restrict energy theft.
Utilization of coal.
People should reduce the consumption and dont waste
it.
Government should build more dams.
Loadsheding scheduled should be properly announced.
Energy should be considered as priority.
Stand alone projects
Implementation of designed projects.
Subsidies
