Fluid Static Hydrostatic forces on submerged surfaces

Total pressure:
The force exerted by a static fluid on the
surface.
Centre of pressure:
The point of application of total pressure on
the surface
The submerged surfaces are,
Horizontal plane surface submerged in liquid
Vertical plane surface submerged in liquid
Inclined plane surface submerged in liquid
Curved plane surface submerged in liquid

Horizontal plane surface submerged in

liquid

Vertical plane surface submerged in liquid

Inclined plane surface submerged in liquid

Curved plane surface submerged in liquid

Problem 1.15: Determine the total pressure

and depth of center of pressure on a plane
rectangular surface of 1 m wide and 3 m deep
when its edge is horizontal and, (a) coincides
with water surface (b) 2 m below the free water
surface.

Problem 1.16: An inclined gate of width 5 m

and depth 1.5 m is installed to control the
discharge of water as shown in figure, the end
A is hinged. Determine the force normal to the
gate applied at B to open it.

Problem 1.17: Find the magnitude and

direction of the resultant force due to water
acting on roller gate of cylindrical form of 4.0 m
dia, when the gate is placed on the dam in such
a way that water is just going to spill. Take
length of the gate is 8 m.
