Hydrostatic Forces on Submerged plane and curved Surfaces

(1) A homogeneous 2.4 m long and 1 m wide
rectangular gate is held in place by a horizontal
cable. Water acts against the gate which is hinged at
point A. Determine the tension in the cable.

(2) Calculate the external force R required to keep the

gate shown in figure 2 closed. The gate is hinged at
A and has a 3m width

(3) A 6-m-high, 5-m-wide rectangular plate blocks the end of a

5-m-deep freshwater channel, as shown in Figure. The plate
is hinged about a horizontal axis along its upper edge
through a point A and is restrained from opening by a fixed
ridge at point B. Determine the force exerted on the plate
by the ridge.

(4) Two square gates close two

openings in a conduit connected
to an open tank of water as
shown in Figure. When the water
depth, h, reaches 5 m it is desired
that both gates open at the same
time. Determine the weight of
the homogeneous horizontal
gate and the horizontal force, R, acting on the vertical gate that is required to keep the
gates closed until this depth is reached. The weight of the vertical gate is negligible, and
both gates are hinged at one end as shown. Friction in the hinges is negligible.
(5) Gate AB in Fig. P2.61 is a homogeneous mass of 180 kg, 1.2 m
wide into the paper, hinged at A, and resting on a smooth
bottom at B. All fluids are at 20°C. For what water depth h will
the force at point B be zero?

(6) Gate AB in Figure is semicircular, hinged at B, and held by a

horizontal force P at A. What force P is required for
equilibrium?

(7) The solid uniform quarter cylinder shown in figure has

a width of 3 m and is in a static equilibrium when
pivoted about hinged O, calculate the Resultant
hydrostatic pressure force and its components

(8) Determine (a) the total hydrostatic force on the

curved surface AB in Figure and (b) its line of action.
Neglect atmospheric pressure, and let the surface
have unit width.

(9) A cylindrical log 6m diameter and 5 m long holds water

as shown in figure Determine
(a) The force pushing it against the dam
(b) The weight of the cylindrical log
(c) The specific gravity of the log.
(10) The hemispherical dome in Figure weighs 30 kN and is filled with water and
attached to the floor by six equally spaced bolts. What is the force in each bolt required
to hold down the dome?
