Q.1 Circular arc Tainter gate ABC pivots about point O. For the position shown in Fig.1, determine (a)
the hydrostatic force on the gate (per meter of width into paper); and (b) its line of action. Does the force
passes through point O?
Q.2 In Fig.2 a one quadrant spherical shell of radius R is submerged in liquid of specific weight ϒ and
depth H>R. Derive an analytic expression for the hydrodynamic force F on the shell and its line of action.
Q.3 The tank of water in Fig.3 is 12cm wide into the paper. If the tank is accelerated to the right in rigid-
body motion at 6 m/s 2 , compute (a) the water depth at AB, and (b) the water force on panel AB.
Q.4 An elliptic end fuel tank is 10m long, with 3m horizontal and 2m vertical minor axes, and filled
completely with fuel oil (ρ = 890 kg/m 3 ). Let the tank be pulled along a horizontal road in rigid body
motion. Find the acceleration and direction for which (a) a constant pressure surface extents from the top
of the front end to the bottom of the back end; and (b) the top of the back end is at a pressure of 0.5 atm
lower than the top of the front end.
Q.5 A 16cm diameter open cylinder 27cm high is full of water. Find the central rigid-body rotation rate
for which (a) one-third of the water spill out; and (b) the bottom center of the can will be exposed.
