How to give a critique


Give positive feedback
When giving negative feedback,
concentrate on only one or two criticisms.
When making criticisms, mention what
the speaker could do to improve.
Be specific!

Think about the organization of the
speech
Consider the content of the speech
Analyze the language the speaker used
Comment on the delivery the speaker

criticism.
Describe the persons behavior carefully and
accurately.
Respond to the present, not to the past.

Try to include ideas for solutions.

Accepting Criticism
Think of criticism as an
opportunity for improvement.
Make sure that you understand
what you hear.
Recognize those who use
constructive criticism.

Clarissa was upset with her
roommate Shareena because
Shareena had left the kitchen a mess
after cooking breakfast for herself.
The minute Shareena got home from
work, Clarissa started criticizing her.

record a check she had written. In
the middle of the discussion, James
brought up the bill Leona had
forgotten to pay last November.

practice explaining to Ricardo the things
he had done wrong in the practice game.
Although it was difficult to accept the
criticism. Ricardo thanked the coach
for his time and interest. He knew he
could learn from the coach.
