OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able:


• Distinguish different phrases that can be used in giving opinions,
• Appreciate the importance of opinion by sharing viewpoints and applying to real life,
• Express ideas and opinions through constructing sentences.

• Topic: Expressing an Opinion or Idea


• Reference: Journeying through Literature and Language with
Philippine Literary Text pp. 51-52 & 120-121.
• Materials: Powerpoint Presentation, Video Clip & Placards
• Teaching Technique: Thematic approach
• Time Frame: 30 minutes

PRELIMINARIES (3 min)
Routine Activities

MOTIVATION (2 min.)
• The teacher will show a picture about friendship.
• The teacher ask what it represents.

LESSON PROPER
• ACTIVITY (5 min.)
• The teacher will read a text about Friends by Godofredo Rivera while listening, the
students will listen intently and answer the questions that follow.

Unlocking of Difficult Words:
Sympathetic: feeling, showing, or expressing sympathy.
Woes: great sorrow or distress.
Sentiment: a view of or attitude toward a situation or event
Despondency: a state of low spirits caused by loss of hope or courage.
Balsam: an aromatic resinous substance, such as balm, exuded by various trees and
shrubs and used as a base for certain fragrances and medical and cosmetic
preparations.
Penury: extreme poverty; destitution.
Disdains: the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or
respect; contempt.
Torment: severe physical or mental suffering.

• ANALYSIS (5 min.)
• After the activity, gather a response from the students using the following questions:
• What do you think is the reason why the author wrote this piece?
• Do you have a friend? Can you share his/her good characteristics as a friend?
• How do you maintain a good friendship?
• What is the importance of having a friend?
• Do you agree with his/her opinion?

• ABSTRACTION (10 min.)


• Expressing an opinion or ideas
-is an act of telling people of what you think about a subject or a given
situation.
• Introducing an opinion
In my own opinion…
Example: In my own opinion having a friend is a good thing.
In my view…
Example: In my view being with friends who does not help you grow will destroy
you.

• Expressing agreement
I agree with his idea…
Example: I agree with his idea that “It is enough friendship –the sharing of
sentiment, for good or ill. But there must be a limit.”
The idea is right…
Example: The idea is right when he said, “Whatever his style we take him because
we can’t live without a friend.”
• Disagreeing with an opinion
I don’t agree with your idea…
Example: I don’t agree with your idea, Aristotle when you say “"O my friends.
There is not friend", because there will always be.
I don’t think so…
Example: I don’t think so, not all friends are there for you when you need them.

Here are some phrases we can use:


• APPLICATION (10 min.)
LIKE OR DISLIKE

• The teacher will divide the class into 5 (five).


• The teacher will read statements about friendship. Each group shall be given a placard
that has a LIKE SIGN if they (AGREE) and DISLIKE SIGN if they (DISAGREE)
they will raise it after the statements have been read. Each group shall have a
representative to express their opinion or viewpoints.

Statements:
• Having good friends who love and support you for who you are is really
important to your happiness.
• A good friend doesn’t put you down or deliberately hurt your feelings.
• A good friend sticks around when things get tough.
• Hugging your friends is a great way to show you care for them.
• Friends can make you miserable too.

• ASSESSMENT (5 mins)
• The students will contruct 3-5 sentences and express their opinions about “A
real friend does not exist”. Write it in a ½ sheet of paper (crosswise).
• The teacher will ask volunteer who would like to share his/her opinion.
