Biochemical
Oxygen Demand
(B.O.D )

B.O.D
The
biochemical
oxygen
demand is defined as the
measure
of
dissolved
oxygen
require
to
decompose
the
organic
matter in water biologically.
Pure water has < 1ppm
Polluted water >5ppm

UPSI students visited to 2

river around Tg. Malim area
to complete their task in
doing experiment to study
the sample of river water

The other
river has
clean and
clear water.

They found that one of

the river polluted and
more fish died .

So they conduct
an experiment by
taking water
samples from
several different
places.

In your
opinion why
fish died??

High B.O.D, means that when there

is a lot of waste in the water, there
are a lot of aerobic bacteria uses up
nearly all of the dissolved oxygen
for respiration.
Thus less dissolved oxygen available
for the fish to use for respiration. So

fish could not survive in the water

and die.

Which water has low

content of the oxygen ?
Drain water, distilled
water, pipe water, pond
water or the aquarium
water? why??

EMPOWERING

FIGURE 1

FIGURE 2

PROCEDURE
1. 5 beaker were labelled with A, B, C, D and E.
2. 100 mL of pond water are collected and poured into
beaker A.
3. The dissolved oxygen (D.O) probe was placed in the
beaker A to read the initial D.O concentration
directly.
4. The results were recorded in Data Logger
Spreadsheet Program.
5.

Steps 1 to 4 were repeated by using different

samples of water

6. The samples were let until 5 days and D.O probes

was
placed again in these samples to read the final D.O
concentration.
7. The B.O.D value was determined by the following
formula:
B.O.D value = Final D.O Initial D.O
p

*Note that, before put the sensor into the next sample
of
water, rinse the sensor with distilled water.

CONCLUSION
B.O.D increase because the presence
of an aerobic microorganism is high in
the water.
High B.O.D level will give potential to
water pollution.
Ways to overcome water pollution:
-Individual and society awareness
-Government responsibilities

B.O.D is an important measure of :

The oxygen using
potential of water
and wastewater

The oxygen content

of water and
wastewater

An organisms
natural level of
oxygen requirement

Biological activity of
water and
wastewater
