INTRODUCTION
Springfield school made decision to close one of its school

Problem ?
Assigning the current students to the remaining 3 schools
Objective:
To minimize the transportation cost of this new arrangement

DEFINING VARIABLES

COST

Note: Figures in dollars

PERCENTAGE BREAKUP:

CONSTRAINTS:

Total number of students in a school Capacity of the School

School 1

School 2

School 3

900

1100

1000

Sum of students in schools from a given area = Total

number of students in an area

Students of a particular grade in a school should be

between 30% and 36% of the total number of students in
that group

OBJECTIVE:

SOLUTION:

NEW CONSTRAINT:
All the students from a particular area have to go to the same school.
Defining new function to solve it
Pij = 1, when students from a given area i go to school j
Pij= 0 , otherwise

10

SOLUTION:
No feasible solution within the given constraints
Certain constraints were no satisfied
1.

Number of students in 7th grade of school 1 exceeded 36% of the total number of students in
school 1

2.

Number of students in 8th grade of school 1 is less than 30% of the total students in school 1

3.

Number of students in 8th grade of school 3 is more than 36% of the total number of students
in school 3

. New solution reached within the other given constraints

COST WHEN BUS SERVICE IS WITHDRAWN IN CERTAIN

ROUTES:
When service is withdrawn along the 1- 1.5 mile routes the cost comes
down to
393800 dollars
When service is withdrawn along the 1.5-2 mile routes the cost comes down
to 340400 dollars
