SPECIAL EDUCATION AND RELATED SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

AT NO COST TO THE PARENTS AND CAN INCLUDE SPECIAL INSTRUCTION IN THE
CLASSROOM, AT HOME, IN HOSPITALS OR INSTITUTIONS, OR IN OTHER SETTINGS

IDEA

This definition of special education comes from IDEA, the

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This law
gives eligible children with disabilities the right to receive
special services and assistance in school.

More than 6.8 million children ages 3 through 21 receive

special education and related services each year in the
United States (Center for Parent Information and Resources,
2014).

IEP

An IEP is an important legal document. It spells out your

childs learning needs, the services the school will provide
and how progress will be measured.

Several people, including parents, are involved in creating

the document. An IEP is a great way to sort out your childs
strengths and weaknesses (Stanberry, 2014).

IEP MUST INCLUDE

Stanberry (2014) stated the following:

A statement of your childs present level of performance (PLOP)

this is how your child is doing in school now

Your childs annual educational goals

Special education supports and services that the school will

provide to help your child reach goals

Modificationsandaccommodationsthe school will provide to

help your child make progress

Transition planning that prepares teens for life after high school

RTI
According to Gorski (n.d.), Response to Intervention (RTI) is a
multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of
students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process
begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of
all children in the general education classroom. Struggling
learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of
Intensity to speed up their rate of learning.

RTI Cont`d

Here are some other reasons why some parents like RTI:

Students continue to receive their core instruction in the general

education classroom.

The increasing levels of support mean that if the first intervention

method doesnt work, there are other options before special
education.

With RTI, the school isnt taking a wait and see approach to
your childs learning. Your child can start to get extra help before
he falls so far behind that he needs to attend summer school or
repeat a grade.

Progress monitoring means that if your child is referred for

special education services, theres already documentation about
which type of instruction has not been helpful for your child

It stated, The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), an organization of parents
and educators, addresses the needs of children from all cultures, racial and ethnic
backgrounds, and socioeconomic groups with demonstrated gifts and talents as well as
those children who may be able to develop their talent potential with appropriate
educational experiences (NAGC). visit http://www.davidsongifted.org
The Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA) is a grassroots, nonprofit
organization whose thousands of members include individuals with learning disabilities,
their families and the professionals who work with them. Organized by parents in 1963,
LDA has over 100 state and local affiliates throughout the United States as well as
members from countries around the world. LDAs mission is to create opportunities for
success for all individuals affected by learning disabilities and to reduce the incidence of

SUMMARY

A Special Education is provided to students with learning

difficulties, physical disabilities, serious behavioral problems and
a lot more others. Individual with Disabilities Act, Individual
Education Plan, and Response to Intervention (RTI) are some of
the important things parents that have children with
exceptionalities need to know. There are a lot of organization
opened for special aid students according to their needs. The
Specific ones that I listed are NAGC, LDA, and FFCMH. One of the
charts show that the percentage of boys is higher than girls who
are receiving special services through IEP. The other chart shows
that the special education services have increased from the
year1989 to 2005.

Reflection

Parents need to know that the special education services are free
of charge to their kids. They need to understand how to access
these services so they can support their kids. The Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act made parents of kids with special
needs even more important members of their child`s education
team. The Individualized Education Program is designed to help
kids succeed in school. Parents play an important role during IEP
meetings. They can work with educators to develop a plan for
their kids. Parents need to know that extra help can be provided
in schools if their children do not do well in the basic skill areas of
reading, spelling, mathematics, or written language and this is
called RTI.
