learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to
build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
Name of Artifact: Service Learning Reflective Summary Report
Date: December 2015
Course: EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching
Brief Description:
I volunteered at Isom Elementary School in a first grade classroom where I
learned that the job of an elementary school teacher is a challenging one, but it can also
be rewarding to know that we are providing education to the next generation of
students. Teachers not only teach basic educational skills but they may also be in
charge of supervising activities and handling a wide range of administrative tasks.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of Instructional Strategies, I have selected to
include my Service Learning Reflective Summary Report. By spending 16 hours in a
first grade classroom, I learned that my teacher used a variety of tools to teach students
the basic subjects. She used games, music, movies, and computers to communicate
knowledge successfully to her students in the classroom. I also experienced that
teachers may also face some challenging tasks. They may have to discuss the physical
or mental problems of a student with administrators and parents, or motivate a child to
join others in classroom activities.
