Identify Potential
Collaborative
Opportunity
Opportunities
We would like to work with APA to host a K-9 Karnival in which people have a chance
to socialize with shelter dogs in order to dispel false perspectives and push
adoption/fostering program options to those who are interested.
Personal Opportunity
We would also like to host a donation drive at Austin High School for needed supplies
including peanut butter, dog treats, dog toys, towels, and other supplies. We will donate
the items to Austin Pets Alive!.

Describe the Opportunity

We are planning an event, hopefully a repeat event, in which we get some adoptable dogs
out of their kennels and out into a beautiful park! While they play around and become
socialized with people and each other, people can attend to see them in their best habitat
and interact with them in a genuine way.
While we plan to advertise it as a sort of dog social in which people can attend and hang
out with dogs, were hoping that some people will make a connection with a compatible
dog and adopt or foster them!
Beyond organizing this sort of event, there will be options for donations, both at the event
and at Austin High, and we can hopefully change perceptions of shelter dogs and aid
people individually!

How This Will Help The Issue

This will help make a dent in the problem of overpopulation because:
Encourage people to adopt animals, which will decrease the amount of dogs and
increase space in the shelters
Increase awareness of the issue
Reverse the view that shelter dogs are sketchy or dangerous
Educate the public about adoption/foster programs and about general information

Evidence of Earlier Attempts by

others
APA- primary, and only take in some dogs on the euthanasia list.
PAWS of Austin- a nonprofit organization helping stray and lost
dogs get homes.
Often there are social media accounts online (like Susies Senior
Dogs or Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary) that have a goal of
putting out a profile of dogs that are considered unadoptable (in
those cases, older dogs)

Communication / Marketing
Strategy
Zilkerbark - Instagram page/business that has a large following of dog
lovers and potential supporters of our event.

Flyers - we can make flyers and distribute them

Austin Parks & Recreation - with the support of the parks department,
they can aid us in securing attention from local news sources like KVUE
School Support - fellow AGS students need volunteer hours and we could
have Amy Taylor make an announcement.

Our Journey So Far

1. Gathered basic background material about the topic of overpopulation in
shelters.
2. Interviewed Monica Dangler and Devon Steiner about their authentic
perspectives on our issue.
3. Emailed Austin Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Tony Savage to reserve a
space for our event.
4. Going to meet as a group with Special Events Coordinator Jason Maurer
who will help us plan our event.
