INTRODUCTION
In

the recent years, stray dog menace


emerged as one of the problem faced by
the people of Kerala.
Thus this presentation is trying to state
that stray dog menace is an emerging
man made disaster in Kerala.
Around 1.84 Lakh people are attacked
by stray dog in Kerala.

HOW STRAY DOGS?


Careless

waste disposal methods.


Illegal butchery and meat selling.
Abandoned domestic dogs in the public
places.
Domestic dogs without license.

PROBLEMS FACED BY SOCIETY


Increase

in the number of stray dogs in

Kerala.
Increase in the number of stray dog
bites.
Domestic animals are attacked.
State government cannot implement
proper control measures.
Stray dog bite causes to health
problems.
Non availability of proper vaccines.

SAFETY MEASURES
Animal Birth Control (ABC) through surgeries.
Year round vaccination for street as well as
owned dogs.
A total ban and imposition of high penalty for
those dumping food materials in public.
Proper waste management facilities
Establishment of scientific slaughter houses
for the slaughter of cattle and poultry.

Making

dog ownership a licensed


procedure.
Only breeding dogs should be kept unneutered.
Awareness programs on self protection
methods and first aid regarding dog
bites as well as waste management.

CONCLUSION
If these recommendations are followed in
letter and spirit, the menace of street dog
can be controlled effectively in a humane
way over a period of time thereby control
in rabies cases/ deaths.
