Week 2: Decimals and Written Addition

Warm Up:
Play in pairs.
Shuffle a pack of 09 cards and sketch a 01 line on
your whiteboards.
One of you takes 4 cards and uses them in order to
make a pair of numbers to mark on the line, e.g.
0.36 and 0.47.
The other child in the pair takes another two cards
and tries to make a number in between. If
successful they win that round; if not the 1st child
does. Swap and repeat.

What happens to the digits as each number is
multiplied by 10? 100? 1000?
And when numbers are divided by 10? 10?
1000?

Activity:
Four children with number cards, e.g. 1, 2, 3
and 4
Stand either side of a large decimal point on
the board and show 1.234.
Multiply their number by 10 and move.
What is the four worth now? And the 2?
10 again, then 100, 100, then
1000.
Repeat with 4 new children.
