Week 6: Number and Written Methods of

Multiplication

Warm Up:
Divisibility
How can we find out whether larger numbers
(over 50) are divisible by 2, 3, 4 or 5?
Lets look at the numbers 51 to 60:
which are divisible by 2, 3, 4 or 5? How
do we know?
With your partner, sort the remaining
numbers from 61 to 100.

What about 124? 452?

Activity:
The distance from London to Sydney is
16,998km. Round this to the nearest
1000km.
This distance is the same as 10,577 miles.
Sketch a line from 10,000 to 11,000
Could you mark where you think 10,577
belongs and explain your thinking?
Round this distance to the nearest 1000
miles, the nearest 100 miles, the nearest 10
miles

Activity:
The distance from London to Wellington is
18,805km or 11,686 miles.
Round these distances to the nearest 10,000,
1,000, 100 and 10 kilometres or miles.
Sketch an empty 0100,000 line. Draw an
arrow to a secret number (teacher see
plan).
Which multiples of 10,000 do you think it
might lie between? What about the 2
multiples of 1000 on either side of the
number?

Activity:
41,267, 45,267 and 48,267
The arrow is pointing to one of these
numbers. Which do you think it is and why?

Main Task:

Main Task:
Find distances between cities around the
world using
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/dis
tance.html
.
First find places less than 10,000km apart,
then more than 10,000km, rounding each to
the nearest 10km, 100km and 1000km.

Plenary:
Write a 5-digit number which rounds to
23,000.
Write a number which rounds to 23,500.
Write a number which rounds to 23,560.
Repeat for 73,000, 73,800 and 73,850.
Include some numbers which round down as
well as up.

Warm Up:
Take it in turns to roll a pair of dice twice.
Multiply the product of the two faces revealed
from the rolling of the dice.
Record on whiteboard/paper.
Partner to have a go next.
Take it in turns.
The winner is the first to have a total closest
to 500.
Try again total of 1000

Activity:
Sketch a line from 100,000 to 200,000.
What number comes half way between
100,000 and 200,000?
Who can mark this on?
Who can mark on a number that you think
will round to 100,000?
Who can mark a number that will round to
200,000.
Do the rest of you agree?

Activity:
Sketch a line from 250,000 to 260,000,
Can someone mark on 255,000?
Can you mark on a number that will round to
250,000?
What about rounding to 260,000?

Main Activity:
Chn work in pairs to shuffle a pack of 09
digit cards, and take 6 to make a 6-digit
number.
Discuss which two multiples of 100,000 it
lies between, sketch a line between these
and mark on the number they made.
Now mark on the number line, the two
multiples of 10,000 in a different colour.

Plenary:
Work with your table
There are some strips of paper. Write on
each piece of paper, a number between
200,000 and 300,000
Put all of the numbers into the centre of the
table.

Use the grid method to work this out
Now use short multiplication method
Which do we find easier and why? In which
ways are both useful? Why might it be
useful to use both for every question?

Now use both the grid method and short

multiplication to work out 3 7263,
estimating the answer first.
Take feedback and agree the answers.
Now have a go at 6 7826.

Progression:
-4 digit by single digit
-5 digit by single digit
