Week 3: Addition and Subtraction

Warm Up:
Bonds to 1
Play ping pong
I will call out a price less than 1, e.g. 63p.
You say the change from 1, e.g. 37p.
But if I randomly say ping you say pong.
Lets have a go.

Activity:
Think of something you would like to buy for
less than 20 (make up the price, no zeros
allowed!).
Now choose another item and its price and
well find the total
We can use Maths Frog to help us to find
how much change we would get from 50.

Activity:
Repeat with two items costing between 40
and 50 each
Find the total
Model finding the change from 100
Repeat with three items costing between
20 and 30
Find the change from 100.

Warm Up Activity:
Change from 20
Copy the grid but write the change from

78.98. How much did I have left?
Discuss in pairs how you could work out the
answer. Feedback.
Lets draw this out using Maths Frog.

Activity:

269.78

Discuss in pairs which two prices you think

might have a difference of less than 50.
Now find the exact difference between the
two prices youve suggested to find out.
Repeat for a pair with a difference between
50 and 100.

Main Task:
Work in pairs to write an amount with five
consecutive digits, e.g. 234.56
Reverse the digits, e.g. 654.32 and
subtract the smaller amount from the larger
amount using counting on frog method.
Repeat with other amounts with
consecutive digits. What do you notice?
Extension:
What if we tried 6 digits?

Warm Up:
Mental subtraction of 2-digit numbers

Play in pairs.
Both write 500 at the top of your own sheet of
paper.
Take turns to shuffle a set of 09 cards and take
two. Use these in any order to make a 2-digit
number to subtract from 500.
Continue subtracting from your previous answer
until you get near 100. Decide whether to deal or
stick. The player closest to 100 wins, but if you go
below 100, you lose!

Activity:
34,782 17,257, 34,782 7257, 34,782 782
Set these out on your whiteboards.
How did we write them out?
Estimate each answer.
Lets solve the first question together.
Work out the second and third questions.
Feedback and compare with estimates.

Plenary:
Covered numbers
Im going to write a sum up on the board but
certain digits will be blanked out with Post-It
Notes.
