AM3 first generation single crystal superalloy.
Nickel based superalloy
microstructure
phase: -
(FCC) nickel-based

phase:-
Ni3Al

Carbides:-
levels of 0.05-0.2%, combines with reactive elements
such as titanium, tantalum, and hafnium to form carbides (e.g., TiC, TaC, or HfC).
These common carbides all have an fcc crystal structure.

Topologically Close-Packed Phases:-

TCPs are potentially damaging for two reasons:
they tie up and
' strengthening elements in a non-useful form,
Fatigue crack growth
Critical shear stress
Creep strain

Ti ` - Ni3(Al, Ti) solid soln strengthening of `

Cr Ni matrix, solid soln strengthening,

corrosion resistance

Co both Ni and ` oxidation and corrosion

resistance lowers solubility of
Al in Ni, so enhances `
formation, improves g` high T
stability
C Nickel combines with Cr, gives
precipitates in Ni
Mo, W solid soln strengthening of Ni

Ta solid soln strengthening of

B improves grain boundary and

carbide / matrix adhesion, so
suppresses cavity formation in
creep
Hf 0.5%, improves high T
ductility
Y improves oxidation resistance
by adhering the oxide layer to
the matrix

Result
Creep crack growth Reduction by
two orders of magnitude by
changing the size of grains
Due to high intergranular crack
propagation susceptibility for large
size of grains.
Smaller the precipitate the slower
the creep strain rate
