Pneumatic Tyres
A pneumatic , or air-filled, tyre is
made of an air tight inner core filled
With pressurized air.
The pressure of the air inside the tyre is
Greater than atmosperic air pressure,
So the tyre remains inflated even with
the weight of a vehicle resting on it.
It gives a certain degree a cushioning
effect as the tyre hits bumps in the
road

Drawbacks

Puncture or blowout

A blowout at high speeds can

lead to a dangerous car accident

Variation on air pressure changes

tyre perfoemance

Can blow out by gunfire or

explosion

Advantages

Eliminate air leaks or tyre blow outs

No maintenance requirsd
Facilitate recycling
Remain mobile even with some of the spokes
are damaged or missing
Durability & long life
Can take gunfire or explosion
Less environmental impact

Conclusion

For years, vehicles have been running on

pneumatic tyres and there was almost a full stop for
any furthure improvement of tyre.
In 20th century the engineers have come up
with a new concept where the tyres never require
air, if the drawbacks that are being encountered
presently are and improved then there is good
future for these tyres. And the vehicles can run
without the necessity of air

HOW IT WORKS

When the tweel is put to the road, the spokes absorb road
impacts the same way air pressure does in pneumatic
tyres. The tread and shear bands deform temporarily as
the spokes bend, then quickly spring back into shape

FUTURE CHALLENGES
Goodyear in collaboration
witth NASA Glenn
Research Center (GRC),
develop non-pnematic
tyres for use first on moon,
and eventually on mars.

Introduction
The Tweel Airless Tyre was first
developed in 2005 by Michelin
The Tweel name is a combination
of the words tyre and wheel
A solid inner hub mounts to the
axle. Thats sorrounded by
Polyutherene spokes arrayed in a pattern of wedges.
A shear band is stretched across the spokes, forming the
outer edge of the tire.
The tension of the shear band on the spokes and the
strength of the spokes themselves replace the air pressure

HISTORY

Wooden wheel of carts and wagons

In 1839 charles Goodyear discoversd that by adding sulphur

to melted latex, it gave elasticity and strength. This vulcanized
rubber Was used to as cushion tyres for cycles

In 1891 John dunlop trying to make

his sons bicycle more comfortable
to ride on, managed to invent the
pneumatic tyre

In1891, Micheline brothers invented the
detachable pneumatic tyre, consisting of a
tube bolted on to the rim
In 1948, Micheline revealed the
first radial tyre having longer life
and increased mileage for the vehicle
The Tweel Airless Tyre was
first developed in 2005 by
Michelin

7. Disscusion

As is the case of most cutting edge technologies, supercavitation is largely

concentrated around military developments and applications. However this technology is
sure to revolutionize underwater weaponry and travel. Under water bullets have already
broken the sound barrier in water. The day is not far away when pencil shaped, rocket
powered vehicles break the sound barrier underwater.
