Evaluation Question

2
How effective is the combination of your main
media product and ancillary task?
The Digipak

THE Digipak above is the Digipak created for the album misfortune. Each part to the
digipak has many different synergistic connotations in which can be explored by the
demographic.
Front cover
The front cover of a digipak is essential in engaging the
target audience. The large main image on the misfortune
front cover automatically denotes who the artist is. The
medium close up shot uses exposes the artists clothing. The
black coat signifies the darkness he has on the outside after
the experiences he has faced where as the top he is
wearing juxtaposing this darkness.
Putting the artist in the white top allows the demographic to
encode the innocence and purity he has inside. This links to
the binary opposites theory exploring the deep
connotations of Dark v Light.

The main image also shows a dark, wet and gloomy school corridor. Overlaying this image over
the character offers an sensational enigma for the target audience to explore on a connotative
level. The ideology behind this image is the fact that the artist is denoted as being trapped. The
main song of the album is a song based on bullying the artist experienced, so placing this image
onto of the artists chest denotes this issue is forever haunting him and was the inspiration behind
the album.

The Name of the artist is in black to connote a synergistic relationship with the artists clothing
and deeper feelings whereas the title is white juxtaposing the the overall negative enigmas
Middle page 1

The first middle page in the digipak denotes a close up of a

guitar resting against a wall with an inspirational quote next
it.

Although the guitar is a musical instrument and offers music

related denotations , more deeper connotations can be
explored by the audience. For many people a guitar is a
symbol expressing the emotional state of a person. The
following guitar in this image does exactly that , Juxtaposing
the other connotations developed in the main image.

The synergetic white colors and perfect condition of the

guitar signifies how the character feels when he is writing
music. As the music video denotes a guitar is the most
predominate instrument used so the artist is expressing the

the same technique as this in order to connect to
the audience on an emotional level. Both Nelly and Ne-Yo have previously used
inspiration quotes within there digipak for the artists to relate too. This links to the uses
and gratifications theory as the audience may feel inspired by the wise words chosen.
Middle Pages 2

The following panoramic shot is synergistic to the image used in the previous page.
Similarly to the Guitar , the music studio has been used to denote a place of escape for the
demographic. The high key , saturated lighting connotes the energy and satisfaction he
gets when he is writing or performing music. The music studio used in the image is also
used in the music video denoting intertextuality between the artists products connoting a
synergistic relationship between the two products. This is essential in order to ensure the
audience can easily distinguish between and relate to the media products produced by the
artist.
Back cover.
The back cover of the digipak is arguably just as
important as the front cover. As well as having a
lot of information regarding the album itself, the
back cover is usually the second image the artists
see as they turn to see what songs are on the
album. The cover denotes an establishing shot of
a long and empty road in which a medium shot
denotes the main artist and character walking.
Just like the Front cover, it can be said that om a
connotative level the ideologies being explored
are very negative juxtaposing the inside content .

The empty road used connotes that loneliness the character was experiencing when writing
this album. As the image suggests, the road was used to signify that there was no escape
from the artists. Wherever the artist would go the problems he would face was there following
him

The other songs in the album express this through the font and the color. The Black text used
alongside the sharp and dented font. Both connote darkness and evil which is extended
connotation to the main front cover.

Only thing ahead of the artist is the
complete darkness denoted on the
main image. This signifies that the
character had no escape from the
problems he was facing , A silhouetted
The white font offers a juxtaposition to the other colors. Firstly as
figure can also be distinguished in the
one of the essential codes and conventions the white makes the
darkness. This ideology allows the
title stand out however it also creates an ideology for the
demographic to decode a deep and
audience denoting the Innocence the character has under all the
physiological fear the artist had.
Music video
The music video I created for the song offers many of the same connotations and
interpretations as the digipak and poster. The music video opens with an Establishing
shot at the train station, this is quickly followed by a canted shot where the character
is first introduced to the audience. The music video at this early stage is in a
equilibrium state however the characters position in shot allows the demographic to
understand a possible jolt of equilibrium as the music video continues. Both a dream
and black and white filter have been used in order to ensure each media product
uses synergetic styles and gives the same connotations to the audience. The music
video then fades into the first close up of the artist performing the song shortly
followed by the first phase of diegetic sound of the song being sun. A dark blue filter
is used to connote the character as being wise and having increased wisdom
following the events he is discussing in the song a jump cut then continues the
performance with the artist wearing a black jacket in front of a white wall, this
ideology is used to signify the darkness and emptiness the character felt on the
inside. The white wall allows the audience to encode the innocence of the character.
The juxtaposition also disorientates the audiences thinking, forcing them to think.
The rest of the music video consists of the same performance shots along with
narrative shots. Unlike a typical music video about bullying the narrative looks
more at the psychological effect of being bullied on a person rather than the actual
physical abuse. A series of close ups and slow motion shots have been used to
express the negative world the character is living allowing the audience to connote
that time for the character is moving incredibly slowly, it can be encoded that the
pain never ends even when the bullying has stopped. Different dark filters have
been included in the narrative scenes of the music video, the most noticeable
being the hate wall filter placed over the character at different stages of the
narrative. This filter is used in order to show how dark and disorientated the
characters mind actually is. Many of the shots used are also disorientated offering
the same connotations to the demographic.
Synergy
All three of the media products follow the same synergistic pattern in order to give similar
connotations to the target demographic which will be discussed in this next slide. Firstly and
the most predominate synergised aspect of the media products I have produced is the overlays
placed over the images to connote loneliness and emptiness. in the digipak, poster and music
video the theme of loneliness is explored in various ways and numerous times. Both the main
image on the digipak and the poster denote a similar black and white theme with artist placed
in a school like setting. This connotes the theme of loneliness as the character is placed all by
himself in a dark and gloomy room. The dark and gloomy room connotes the inner darkness
the character feels throughout the music video.

The music video itself also shows a synergistic link through the scenes of the character all
alone in different areas, The same denotations and significations can be explored as the dark
filters offer the same enigmas to the demographic

Thirdly all aspects of this media production also juxtapose this negative atmosphere denoted
by offering inspiration and brighter colours to try and motivate viewers. This links to the uses
and gratifications theory as some audience members may find themselves relating to the
images used. Inspirational quotes are found both on the digipak and the music video so the
audiene are able to look at the bright side of such a negative issue.
