RFID Enabled LSmart

Library Management
System
Case
The case discuss about the implementation of RFID system
in library of Punjabi University in Patiala, Punjab , India.
It is one of the premier university in India established in
1962.
The Universitys library is having more than 5 lacs books,
Subscribes more than 300 journals and 22 Newspapers.
Punjabi University is having a large population of students
and Staff.
The case discuss about the problem faced in the
implementation of system in the University and how they
overcome with these situation.
The case also discuss how the System is helping the library.
Q. 1) How can RFID technology simplify
basic library processes related to lending
and returning of books?
For Lending the Books-
Each book contains an RFID tag which contains electronically
stored information that can be read from a distance of several
meter. This tag does not need to be scanned in the line of sight.
All the counters in the library have a touch screen with an RFID
glass sensor.
Borrowers simply place books and other material on this screen
and hand over their cards to library staff.
The screen reads the RFID tags , while card reader opens up a
members profile on the system.
The staff assigns the material to the borrower and issue a
receipt with the date of return clearly marked.
This system eliminates the need for physical recording and
stamping. It also minimize human error.
Q 1)
Cont.

For Returning Books-

Members simply drop their books into a specially
designed drop- box at the library.
A scanner within the box scans the RFID tag of
the dropped book and marks the book as
returned in the system.
Member accounts are updated automatically and
proof- of- return slip is issued.
In case of book is overdue, the slip also displays
the amount of fine that the member needs to
display.
Q.2 ) What kind of technology does your
school or university library use ? Does it
plays a crucial role in managing operations?
Our Library usees Bar code for library
functioning.
Barcode technology plays an
important role automating the
functions of the library, especially
the circulation. Its application
increases the speed and accuracy in
operations.
Q 3) How is RFID helping the library of Punjabi
university detect and prevent the theft of books.

An RFID tag can be detected by the

electronic article surveillance (EAS) system
installed at the library gates.
An alarm would be triggered if any member
attempts to leave with an unissued item.
THE EAS gates are linked to the librarys
surveillance station.
When an offender passes through the gate,
the camera takes their photograph and
sends into surveillance station.
Q4) Discuss the various problem
encountered by the Punjabi University while
implementing The RFID System. Also discuss
how they overcome.
Regular power supply is not available. Any type of
power failure could results the failure of system.
Punjabi University purchases generators to ensure
that the system kept running.
The RFID tagging in the books is most crucial part.
They face multiple challenges in this task.
In some cases , The data entry operator made wrong
entries. In other case the moisture in the tags
resulted in their malfunctioning.
To Solve these issues, the trained library staff
untagged all the books and then tagged them again,
this time correctly.
