Types of suspension
Passive
Active and
Semi Active
Passive suspension

The passive suspension or

conventional system
contains springs to absorb
energy and damper to
dissipate energy.
The spring stiffness &
damping factor are fixed
initially at the design stage
itself so this system cannot
adapt to varying loads,
road irregularities and
fluctuating speed.
SEMI ACTIVE In the Semi-Active suspension
system, a constant stiffness spring &
SUSPENSION variable damper are present in
between the sprung mass and
unsprung mass
Damping fluid properties are varied
to achieve the desired performance
over the entire range of operating
conditions
A semi active suspension is based on
control damping, thus has a
disadvantage of limited force range
Active suspension

Active suspensions are

developed to overcome the
drawbacks of the Passive
and Semi active
suspensions

Active suspension has the

capability to adjust itself
continuously to changing
conditions unlike the
Passive system
