CONVERGENT OR
SUBDUCTION ZONE

-adjacent plates converge and collide.

-it is a boundary where two separate plates are pushing into
each other.
A subduction process carries the slab-like plate, known as
the under-thrusting plate, into a dipping zone, also
referred to as wadati-benioff zone, as far as downward
as 650-700km into the earths interior.
Types of convergent zone that exist:
OCEANIC CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES occurs when two
oceanic plates meet and one oceanic plate is pushed underneath
the other. Ex. Marianas Trench
cause formation of trenches
CONTINENTAL CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES occurs when both
grinding plates consist of continental lithosphere. The continental
plates converge , buckles and later compress to create tall
mountain ranges on earth. Ex. Himalayas
OCEAN CONTINENT CONVERGENCE occurs whenever an
oceanic plates pushes into and moves beneath a continental plate.
*This event gives rise to the formation of a volcanic arc near the edge
of a continental leading plate.
