The Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences define a short film as an original
motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.
Whereas featured films are considered to be any film that goes higher than the 40
minute mark.
History of Short Films
Films produced during the birth of the industry would be considered short due to a
modern audience.
During the mid 1890s the first films were being seen by the public.
In the 1920s shorts film are on a rise.
Due to the great depression in the 1930s it has a huge impact on the
distribution of films to cinemas.
In todays film industry short films are well regarded by many festivals which
brings upcoming short filmmakers together.
