Stimulants

Are also known as uppers


Stimulants produce increased mental alertness, wakefulness, loss of
appetite and provide a feeling of well-being
Amphetamines

Used for weight reduction in obese people


Relieves mild depression and treatment of narcolepsy (excessive desire to
sleep)
Caffeine

Present in coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate and some wake-up pills
Cocaine

To achieve euphoria (intense feeling of being high)


Nicotine

Acts as a powerful stimulant of the central nervous system


Shabu

Known as poor mans cocaine


Chemically known as methamphetamine
Also called as upper or speed
Taken orally, inhaled, injected
Depressants

Are known as downers


It acts to depress the central nervous system
It promotes relaxation and sleep
Alcohol

Known as the king of drugs


May be used as disinfectant, rubbed on a childs skin to reduce fever
according to a popular folk lore
Barbiturates

Induce sleep in persons with anxiety, mental stress, and insomnia


Valuable in the treatment of epilepsy and other forms of seizure
Available in capsules, pills, or tablets
Taken orally or injected
Narcotics

Relieve pain and produce profound sleep


Pail-killer, cough depressant, and active component of anti-diarrhea
preparations
Tranquilizers

Calm, relax, and diminish anxiety


Used to treat nervous states and some mental disorders without producing
sleep
