An algebraic

expression having
two terms is
called a binomial
An algebraic
expression
having three terms is
called a
Example 1 add 8x +6y +5 and 2x -3y
solution : adding by column method :

-8x2 +6y2+5
+2x2 -3y2
-6x 2+ 3y2 + 5
Now adding by horizontal
method :

(-8x2+6y2+5 ) + (2x2-3y2 )

= (-8x2 + 2x2 ) + (6y2

3y2 ) +5

= -6x2 + 3y2 +5
Example 2 : subtract
(6p2 13 p q + r ) from (-12p2 + 5p q - 14 r)
solution : subtracting by column method :

-12p2 + 5p q - 14 r
6p2 13 p q + r
- + -
-18 p 2 + 18 p q 15 r
Subtracting by horizontal method :
Application of product of monomial

example 5 : find the area of the rectangle whose length is y and breadth
is half of its length .

Solution
area of a rectangle = length breadth
= y y/2
= (1 ) ( y x )

= y 2 ( square units )
Multiplication of a monomial and binomial
example multiply 3 x y and 8 x 2 + 7 x y
solution - 3 x y ( 8 x 2 + 7 x y ) = 3 x y 8 x 2 +3 x y 7 x y
= 24 x 3 y + 21 x 2 y 2
Q1 FIND THE FOLLOWING PRODUCT
( 1 ) ( 13 a x 4 ) ( 5 a y + 1 )
( ii)( 3 x 2 + 5 x 7 ) ( x+5 y )
Q 2 Express ( 5x 6 ) ( 12 x 2 y )
( 3/20 x y 2 ) as a monomial and
then valuate at x = 1 , y = 2
Q 3 simplify ( y 2 7 y + 4 )
( 3 y 2 - 2 ) + ( y + 1 ) ( y2 + 2 y )
Q 4 find the H C F of the terms in the
expression 3a2 b 2 + 6 a 2 c 2 + 12 a 2 b 2 c 2 .
