PLC Machine History

 The first PLC was invented by Morley in 1969 who is considered to be

the “father” of the PLC. The models name was 084 and was created
for General Motors.

 In 1973, the first commercial PLC machine was born and Michael
Greenberg is the designer.
What is a PLC?

 It’s a digital computer used for the automation of various electro-

mechanical processes in industries. They are designed to survive in
harsh situations and shielded from heat, cold, dust, and moisture
etc.
Programming languages

 Ladder Logic
 Function Block Diagram (FBD)
 Structured Text (ST)
 Instruction List (IL)
 Sequential Function Chart (SFC).

Advantages of PLCs

 Flexibility in programming and reprogramming.

 Cost effective for controlling complex systems.
 High speed of operation.
 Ability to communicate with computer systems in the plant.
 Ease of maintenance.
 Reduced space.
 Energy saving.
Disadvantages of PLCs

 Fixed Circuit Operations.

 PLCs manufacturers offer only closed architectures.
Applications

 1) Robots
manufacturing and
control
 2) Car park control
 3) Train control station
system
 4) Food processing
