I do: my turn to talk. This is the explanation section of our
lesson where you are required to listen.

We do: this is where we discuss or work on the concepts

together.

You do: your turn to be involved. You may be working in a

group or on an activity individually.

Number Sequences
Numbers are written and counted in sequence. Let’s count
to infinity!
The sequence can:
• be infinite (go on forever) 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, …
• go forwards 201, 202, 203, 204, …
• go backwards 40, 39, 38, 37, …
• start at any number 877, 878, 879, 880, …
• be a skip or alternate pattern 5, 10, 15, 20, … or 1, 2, 1, 2, …
Different Types of Number Sequences
Identify whether the numbers below create a forwards, backwards or skip number
sequence.

a) 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60

b) 290, 289, 288, 287, 286, 285, 284, 283

c) 521, 522, 523, 524, 525, 526, 527, 528

d) 410, 420, 430, 440, 450, 460, 470, 480

e) 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56

Number Patterns and Rules
Number patterns are made using different rules.
The rules let us know if we need to add or subtract numbers to create
and continue a number sequence.
Look at the examples below.
5, 10, 15, 20…
I add 5!
a) 120, 122, 124, 126, 128, 130 – add 2

b) 450, 455, 460, 465, 470, 475 – add 5

c) 890, 880, 870, 860, 850, 840 – subtract 10

Identifying Rules
The rule
To know the rule in a number pattern, we need to: is…
add 2!
• look at the next numbers in the sequence
30 32 34 36

• count the difference between the numbers

2 2 2
30 32 34 36

• identify if the difference between the numbers increases or decreases.

add 2 add 2 add 2
30 32 32 32
Identifying Rules
Look at the number sequences below, then identify the rule.

a) 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150 rule = ?

b) 500, 505, 510, 515, 520, 525 rule = ?

c) 320, 322, 324, 326, 328, 330 rule = ?

d) 903, 906, 909, 912, 915, 918 rule = ?
