WHAT IS THE AIM OF DESIGN CLINIC

• To promote design as a value adding activity and
integrating the same into the mainstream business and
industrial processes of MSMEs.
• For pursuance of
(a) the long term goal of helping the manufacturing
segment in the MSMEs
(b) To move up the value chain
from “original equipment manufacturing” through “original
design manufacturing”
(c) To move up the value chain for “original brand
manufacturing”

HOW THE DESIGN CLINIC

• The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad has

been designated as the nodal agency for the scheme.
• NID will function as a link between the MSMEs and the
Government (MSME-DIs and office of the DC (MSME).
• It would also act as a single point of contact for the office of
the MSME-DIs and DC (MSME).
• The primary role of the NID would be to spread awareness
and facilitate matchmaking between the Design
Companies/ Consultants and MSMEs.

THE DESIGN CLINIC SCHEME

• The Scheme is designed by the office of DC(MSME)

Ministery of MSME Govt. of India and National Institute of
Design (NID), Ahmedabad has been designated as the nodal
agency for the scheme.
• The total scheme budget will be Rs.73.58 crore, out of
which Rs. 49.08 crore will be GoI assistance and the
balance amount will be contributed by the beneficiary
MSMEs.

THE IMPLEMENTATION
• The Scheme is designed by the office of DC(MSME)
Ministery of MSME Govt. of India and National Institute of
Design (NID), Ahmedabad has been designated as the nodal
agency for the scheme.

• The total scheme budget will be Rs.73.58 crore, out of

which Rs. 49.08 crore will be GoI assistance and the
balance amount will be contributed by the beneficiary
MSMEs.

THE IMPLEMENTATION
Step 1
• Organizing one day awareness program on value addition
through Design.
• The prospective participants would be preferably cluster
member units or otherwise any micro & small enterprises.
• Assocations of the Industries/Cluster Associations will have
to take lead for organizing these seminars, and getting
registration done with the NID.

THE IMPLEMENTATION
Step 1 Contd..`
• NID will provide all technical as well as financial assistance
to the Association on reimbursement basis. 100%
expenditure will be borne by GoI (Limited to Rs 60,000
Max.)
• The particiipation should be min. 30-50 max.
• In the seminar a group or individual MSE who are
interested in Design assistance will be
registered/identified.

THE IMPLEMENTATION
Step 2
• A workshop of 3 - 5 days will be organized for selected
cluster/units through one day seminar.
• This will begin with the experts visiting the cluster units
and understanding the issues concerning the cluster.
• Thereafter, there will be a training on design clinic solutions
delivered by an expert or a group of experts in an
interactive manner.
• The designated expert will be registered/identified for
preparation of a Design Need Assessment Survey Report
etc.

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Step 2 Contd..
• The Design Need Assessment Survey report will
(a) review the present state of the cluster.
(b) identify areas of improvement and within that.
(c) identify specific areas which could be served by design intervention.

• The report will present howthe design solution(s) will finally convert to a
business solutions with sequence of actions & worshop proceedings.

• The GoI contribution for the conduct of a workshop (including preparation

of the Design Need Assessment Survey report) will be 75% or Rs 3 Lakhs
Max. Remaining amount will be contributed by the participating MSMEs.

• From the workshop the interested unit specific will be identified

for Design Projects

• The MSMEs desirous of design intervention could get the

Design Need Analysis conducted from a designer/design
company / academic institution approved by Design Clinic
Centre

• Based on the need analysis and consulting outcome a

detailed project proposal shall have to be prepared.
• This proposal shall include all aspects of the proposed
project and the financial details.
• The proposal shall be submitted in the prescribed format for
approval by the assessment panel of the design clinic
Centre.

• The funding support will be given by way of a grant upto a

maximum of 60% in case of
(a) a group of four or more MSME applicants the total
approved project cost or Rs. 15 Lakh, whichever is less.

(b) Upto three MSME applicants the total approved project

cost or Rs. 9.0 Lakh, whichever is less, in case of a
individual MSME or a group.

THE CONCLUSION

A proactive systematic approach in group of MSEs in the

form of Cluster Associations or Industry Associations this
design clinic scheme will turn into a mile stone for branding
and growth of MSME family as the Govt. of India providing
grant of Rs 9 Lakhs & Rs 15 Lakhs upto 3 units & 4 or more
units respectively.
