The document summarizes a Youth Mental Health First Aid training that the author attended on March 15th and 16th. The training taught how to help adolescents experiencing mental health or addiction challenges, including how to identify warning signs, ask questions, and use a 5-step ALGEE action plan to assist in crisis and non-crisis situations. The author found the training improved their ability to interact with students dealing with mental health issues.

Event By : DeAndrea Crockwell YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID March 15th and 16th
“Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to
teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis”. The Youth Mental Help First Aid coursed provided me with more information on depression, anxiety, substance use, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADD/ADHD), eating disorders and substance abuse. I learned about how to look for warning signs. What questions I should ask to someone who I feel may be at risk. We participated in many interactive activities that encompassed discussing case scenarios, identifiers and ages of onset for different mental health diagnoses. I learned about a 5-step action plan that I can use when helping adolescence in both non-crisis and crisis situations called ALGEE. ALGEE stands for: Assess for risk of suicide or harm Listen nonjudgmentally Give reassurance and information Encourage appropriate professional help Encourage self-help and other support strategies My Experience I am very glad that I went to the workshop as it has greatly improved how I deal with crisis situations at my internship. Through learning more about mental healh disorders and illnesses I have been able to better interact with students who live with mental health disorders and illnesses. Certificate of Completion
