BASICS OF DRILLING, COMPLETION

&
WORKOVER OPERATIONS

BY

MR. RASHID KHAN

26TH AUGUST, 2009

SESSIONS 1
• Tourist
Beginning of the Sessions

Let us see what is there

Develops interest as time goes on or ??

Move over to observer then to Participant ??

• Tourist • Observer
Comes with some interest
• Observer Observes the proceedings – does not participate directly yet

Develops the urge to involve and gets in gradually

•Participant
Move over to Participant ??

• Participant
Starts with specific objectives in mind

Directly participates in the sessions

Brings a sense of involvement for oneself and to the sessions

Stays as participant or drops to other two ??

WHAT IS TESTING?

WHY DRILLING IS FASCINATING?

• Because it is a mystery

• Everything is happening sub-surface

• We can predict, evaluate and interpret but no absolute data

• That is why it is not only fascinating but also risky

When we talk about risk, there are many of
them

Now let us discuss on one risk that

involves the most precious or irreplaceable
asset

DEVIATED, ERD AND HORIZONTAL WELLS

We will discuss them in details during the course time.

Now, let us just have a brief introduction to these type of wells.

DEVIATED

DEVIATED WELLS
“Directional drilling is defined as an art & science involving deflection of a
well bore in a specified direction in order to reach a predetermined
objective below the surface of the earth”
Applications – why? Where?

• To drill to inaccessible locations

If reservoir located under river beds, mountains, cities etc.

• Multiple wells from a single locations – optimisation of cost and operational efficiency
(gathering and production systems) – like from a platform

• To prevent geological or sub-surface problems

For examples – Faults - This eliminates hazard of drilling a vertical well through steeply
inclined fault plane which could create lot of difficulties

For example – Salt Dome

• To drill multiple targets in a single well

• To drill relief wells in case of a blow out in a vertical well

HORIZONTAL

Why?
Where?
How?

Target
ERD AND HORIZONTAL WELLS

Some advantages:

1. Increased horizontal displacement from central platform

2. Increased penetration length of reservoir.

3. Require less number of wells to develop a field.

4. Require less number of platforms to develop a field in offshore.

5. Increasing the drainage area.

6. Increasing the efficiency of enhanced oil recovery ( EOR ).

7. Improving productivity in fractured reservoirs by intersecting a numbers

of vertical fractures.
