 Stress that acts on the bearing surface of a material
 Bearing Surface/Area is the projected area of the curved bearing surface
Shear Stress
 Stress that acts tangential to the surface of the material.
 Area is tangential to the load.
Two Types:
Pure Shear
– Torsion by twisting Direct Shear (Simple Shear)
– Tangential
Shear Stress
Direct Shear (Simple Shear),
– Tangential
Shear Strain
Shear stresses have no tendency to elongate or shorten the element
Shear stresses produce a change in the shape of the element
Shear Strain (Distortion)

- a measure of angle
- measured in degree or radian
