• SLO 1: Identify and recognize signs of choking
• SLO 2: Distinguish between a choking victim
with a partial obstruction and a total obstruction
• SLO 3: Respond to a choking victim
• SLO 4: Perform the Heimlich maneuver and
back blows on an adult or child one year or older

The Choking Victim
• Coughing
• Making whistling noises
• Universal Choking Sign
• Bright Red/Blue face
• Trouble Speaking
Types of Choking
(Obstruction)
1. Partial Obstruction
• Encourage coughing
• Do NOT touch
• Comfort
2. Complete Obstruction
• If conscious but cannot breathe, initiate Heimlich
Maneuver and back blows (ask permission)
• If unconscious, call 9-1-1 and perform CPR if trained
Heimlich Maneuver
• Purpose: Push air out of the lungs to force
the victim to cough with the hope that the
cough will dislodge the object from the
airway
• Complete survey
