Expressions of quantity

Expressions of quantity describe the


amount , or the number of something .

Expressions of quantity are used with :


a) Count nouns
b) Uncount nouns
COUNT AND UNCOUNT NOUNS
It is important to understand the difference
between count and uncount nouns:

Count nouns: person, bottle, dollar, cup, table.


Uncount nouns: water, advice, bread, cheese.

We can say : three dollars, two bottles. We can


count them.
We cannot say two waters, three cheeses. We
cannot count them.
COUNT NOUNS CAN BE:
• SINGULAR
• PLURAL
Excamples:
1. A man from the government called me
last night.
2. Can I borrow three eggs?
UNCOUNT NOUNS CAN BE :
• SINGULAR
Excamples:
1. She’s giving you advice.
2. Do you want cheese?
MUCH AND MANY

Much – is only used with uncount nouns .


Usually it is only used in:
• Questions and,
• Negative sentences
Excample:
1. Will you spend much money tonight?
2. Did you study much English when you were a child?
3. I didn’t have much dinner last night.
4. She doesn’t have much time right now.
Many – is only used with count nouns.
Usually it is only used in:
• Questions and,
• Negative sentences

Excample:
1. How many people went to the party?
2. I don’t have many friends
3. Did you see many animals on your trip?
4. I didn’t take many photos.
