There are eight parts of speech

It is important to be able to recognize and

Kinds of parts of speech
Is a naming word. It names a person, place,

thing, etc.
• Examples: Richard, box, tree, etc.

Is a word which describes an action (doing


Verb something) or a state (being something)
• Examples: walk, talk, think, believe, like etc.

Adjective Is a word that describes a noun.


• Examples; big, yellow, thin, beautiful, quick, etc.
Adverb Is a word which usually describes a verb
• Examples: slowly, well, yesterday, here, everywhere, etc.

Pronoun Is used instead of a noun, to avoid repeating the noun


• Examples: I, you, they, we, he, she, it

Conjunction Joins two words, phrases or sentences together


• Examples: but, so, and, because, or
Usually comes before a noun, pronoun or
Preposition noun phrase
• Examples: on, in, by, under, at

Is an unusual kind of word because it often


Interjection stands alone
• Examples: Ouch!, Hurray!, Oh no!

Article Is used to introduce a noun


• Examples: the, a, an
