DATE OF EXPERIMENT
Tuesday, 6th March 2018, 10:20 am – 16:20 pm

OBJECTIVES
1) To choose the tools that needed according to
the experiment
2) To choose the materials that needed according
to the experiment
3) To isolate the ginger oil from ginger rhizome
TOOLS
1. Soxhlet extraction 1 set
2. Evaporator 1 pcs
3. Separate funnel 1 pcs
4. Champion glass 1 pcs
5. Refractometer 1 pcs
6. Burner 1 pcs
7. Erlenmeyer 3 pcs

SUBSTANCES
1. Sodium sulfate anhydrate sufficiently
2. Dry ginger 30-50 gram
3. Petroleum ether 100 ml

The result of Extraction Process

(Brownish yellow solution)
FIRST EXPERIMENT

Extract put into evaporator

The volume of residual
solvent obtained is 60
mL from the initial
volume of 100 ml (60%).
A well categorized
evaporation process is if
the solvent remaining
50% or above of the
original solvent,
because not too much
solvent is lost as a result
of the evaporation
process.
FIRST EXPERIMENT
The extract(result after put into evaporator) added with
Na2SO4 anhydrous and do a decantation process

Index
FIRST EXPERIMENT

Taken the filtrate and weighed

Mass of ginger oil: 0,3 gram

FIRST EXPERIMENT

Calculate the Rendement

Rendement of ginger oil
Known :
 Mass of ginger = 10 grams
 Mass of ginger oil = 0.3 grams
Asked: Rendement?
Answer:
𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
Rendement = × 100%
𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
0.3 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚
Rendement = × 100% = 3%
10 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚

In the literature the Rendement of ginger oil is in range

1% - 3% (Farry & Murhananto, 1994).
FIRST EXPERIMENT

Calculate the refractive index

The measure of
refractive index using
Refractometer tool for n- In the literature the refractive
hexane index is obtained index of ginger oil is 1,486-
at 1.336249 while for 1,492 and refractive index of
ginger oil is 1.4586755 at n-hexane is 1,3748-1,3810.
room temperature 25°C. (Nuryoto, et al. 2011).
SECOND EXPERIMENT

Calculate the constant mass

Weighed the The fresh ginger Weighed the

fresh ginger entered into dry ginger from
oven fresh ginger
• First result of the weighing process we obtain mass, 0.5 gram.
• In the second repetition of the covenant we obtain mass, 0.3 gram.
• In repeating the third covenant we obtain mass, 0.3 gram.
So, the constant mass is 3 gram
SECOND EXPERIMENT

Determine the water content

By using formula
𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 − 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 content = × 100%
𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
Water content of fresh ginger
𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠−𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
Water content = × 100%
𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
1 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚−0.3 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚
Water content = × 100%
1 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚

Water content = 70%

In literature the water content of fresh ginger is 80-82% (ICAR -
Indian Institute of Spices Research, 2015). This difference occurs
because, the ginger is not 100% fresh ginger because it has been
placed for several hours in the room that causes the water content
in the ginger is reduced.
