 CONTROL OF AIR POLLUTION
The condition in which air is
contaminated by harmful substances is
known as air pollution.
Any unfavorable substance which cause many
diseases and problems in the organisms.
 Airpollution occur when gases mainly
oxides of sulfur ,carbon and nitrogen ,dust
particles, fumes (or smoke) are introduced
into the atmosphere in a way that makes it
harmful to humans, animals and plant.
 Definition
Those substances which are responsible for the
pollution are called as pollutants.
Types of pollutants
 Non-Degradable pollutants
Bio-Degradable pollutants
SO2 NO2 CO

 Burning of fossil fuel
 Transportation emissions
 Agriculture side effects
 Home heating
 Volcano eruptions
 Forest fires
 Aerosols and CFCs
What is SO2
 Sulfur dioxide is a gas.
 It is invisible and has a nasty ,sharp smell.
 It reacts easily with other substances to form harmful
compounds such as sulfuric acid , sulfurous acid &
sulfate particals.
 Human sources
 Burning of fossil fuels such as coil , oil & natural gas
 Generation of electricity through fossil fuel power
station
 Mobile sources such as locomotive, ships and other
equipment
 About 99% of the SO2 in air comes from human
sources.
 Agriculture
 Natural sources include
 Volcanoes eruption
 Forest fires
 Oceans
 Decaying plant maters
Human health
 Itirritates the
 Nose
 Throat
 Skin cancer
 Mucous membranes of the eyes
 Lung cancer
 Itshigh concentrations can affect
 Lungs function
 Heart diseases
 Asthma attack
 Plants are sensitive to SO2 and directly
 or indirectly affected by SO2.
 H2SO4 is toxic soil fertility
 Inhibits photosynthesis
Leaf molting
Reduced growth
Reduction of yield
 Effectson building made of
marble and limestone.
 This has been a significant
problem In Euorpe.
 Leather loss the flexibility and
strength
 Acidrain is a well known environmental
problem.
 When SO2 & NO2 in atmosphere combine

 with rain water it form sulfuric acid &

nitric acid which cause acid rain.
 It damage buildings and metal work.
 Nitrogen dioxide is the chemical compound.
 NO2 is favored at higher temperatures.
 Nitrogen oxide (NO2) is highly poisonous gas.
 NO2 is not usually released directly into the air it forms when NO and
other nitrogen oxides react with other chemicals in air.
 Main source is human activities such as burning of fossil fuel.
 NO2 emissions occur through
Truck
Buses
Power plants
 Natural sources are:
Volcanoes
Bacteria
Effects on health
 Respiratory system
 Nervous system
 Digestive tracts
 Reduce oxygen carrying capacity of blood
Its high concentration cause
Pneumonia
Lung cancer
 Toxic for plants
 Reduce plant growth
 Effect vegetation
 High concentration damage leaves
 Damage plant tissue
 CO is carbon mono oxide.
 It is colorless ,odorless and tasteless gas formed due to
incomplete combustion of carbonaceous matter
 It is toxic to animals
 It produces in normal animals metabolism
 Sources in home
 Clothes dryers
 Water heaters
 Furnaces or boilers
 Gas and wood burning
 Gas stoves and ovens
 Motor vehicles
 Generators
 Power tools
 Automobiles
 Tobacco smoke
 Gasoline powered equipment
Its low concentration cause
 Fatigue in healthy people
 Chest pain
 Heart diseases
Its high concentration cause
 Effect on vision
 Coordination
 Headaches and Dizziness
 Confusion
 Death
 Reduce nitrogen fixing capacity of bacteria which effect the
plant growth
 Its high concentration cause
 Leaf drop
 Reduce size of leaf
 Ageing
 Less drive
 Use public transport
 Walk or ride Bike
 Buy energy efficient Vehicles
 Buy recycled products
 Avoid Plastic Bags
 Avoid plastic bottles
 Use paper bags
 Recycle paper, plastic and metal
 Use Fan Instead of AC
 Turn off AC and heaters after use
 Turn Off Lights when not in Use
 Make use of Solar Energy
 Use energy saver
 Do not smoke inside your home
 Buy rechargeable Batteries
 Use eco-friendly products in your home
 Keep air-cleaning houseplants
 Avoid paints, cleaning agents and glue
 Use baking soda instead of harsh cleaner
 Use natural gas instead of Charcoal
 Dry clothes on Clothesline instead of dryer machines
