“My heart will go on”

Designers: S. Parra,

Background Information

- Artificial heart is an example of the advanced electronics, synthetic material

as well as pharmaceutical development in today’s medical technology.
- Over 700,000 people suffer from the most lethal cardiovascular diseases,
according to National Center for Health and Statistics (NCHS).
- Limited supply of heart donors, many
- 700,000 victims die while on the waiting list
- Every 10 minutes someone is added to the transplant list
- NAC, 1963: long-range research program to develop a permanently
implantable artificial heart in the attempt to find solutions.
What is an Artificial Heart?

- A total artificial heart is needed when your organ has failed

for any reason such as a disease etc.
- Implanted into any person of any age.
- Option for those who are waiting on a transplant and can be
good from a couple weeks to years.
How does it work?

- Consists of two artificial ventricles made from biocompatible plastic in which

they are connected by a velcro that allows surgeons to place heart
according to the person's anatomy
- Each ventricle has two mechanical valves an outflow and inflow one
- The diaphragm is a balloon like thing that divided the heart into two
chambers (blood and air chamber)
How does it work?

- Cannula tubes are connected to the air chambers of the ventricle which exit
out the abdominal wall that is attached with the external pump
- The external pump inflates and deflates the diaphragm which allows blood
to be pumped
Timeline
● 1947- Dr. Willem Johan Kolff research starts to develop an artificial heart

● 1957- @ Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Kolff and Dr. Tetsuzo Akutsu are implanting artificial hearts on animals and a
dog survives for 90 minutes

● 1963- Ventriloquist Paul Winchell is was the first patient with an artificial heart. Dr. Henry creates the “Heimlich”
maneuver to save choking victims.

● 1967- Development of the artificial heart continues

● 1969- Dr. Denton is the first surgeon to implant an artificial heart in a human

● 1971- Don Olsen, a veterinarian, Robert Jarvik, designer of artificial hearts, and Dr. William DeVries, leader of
animal implants to human implants, join the experiment.

● 1973- Tony lives for 30 days off an Kolff Total

● Now people are

Timeline surviving up to 4.5

years with no
complications

● 1976- Abebe lives for 184 days off an Jarvik 5

● 1981- Alfred Lord Tennyson lives for 268 days off an Jarvik 5

● 1982- Dr. Barney Clark is 61 and implanted an Jarvik 7 and lives for 112 days

● 1984- William J. Schroeder is the second person that is implanted with an Jarvik 7 and lives for 620 days
and eventually dies of a lung infection.

● 1992- The CardioWest Total Artificial Heart clinical study begins at five centers.

● 2002- The clinical study is completed

● 2004- October 15 it gets the FDA approval becoming the first TAH being named SynCardia temporary
CardioWest™ Total Artificial Heart.
Syncardia
- Two ventricles
- Four valves that pump blood throughout
the body
- Made from biocompatible plastic
Case Study
Swiss Researchers found that metal and
plastic can be hard for the body to adjust to
and possibly cause damage to both blood and
tissue.

- Silicone ventricles (pump like a real

heart)
- Only last a few thousand beats before it
gives out
Design Statement

The biggest problem in the leading artificial hearts used today

is that patients experience blood clotting, which could be fatal.
But, we are here to change that. Our artificial heart will change
the way the blood flows from the ventricles into the heart. The
material connecting both of these would is made up of a
flexible and durable material that will control the flow of the
heart so it will not clot.
The Changes...

Elastomer- a rubbery compound
