Example ( cylinder )
• Atmospheric air at T∞ = -5 oC and a free
stream velocity u∞ = 6 m/s flows across a
single tube of outside diameter D = 25cm. The
tube surface is kept at a uniform temperature
Tw = 180 oC. Determine the average heat
transfer coefficient and calculate the rate of
heat loss from a 1m length of the tube.
• Ans: h = 20.53 W / m2-oC , Q = 2982 W
Example ( sphere )
• Water at T∞ = 20 oC flows with a free-stream
velocity of u∞ = 1 m/s over a 2.5cm diameter
sphere whose surface is maintained at a
uniform temperature of Tw = 140oC.
Determine the average heat transfer
coefficient and calculate the heat loss from
the sphere to the air.
• Ans: hm = 8958 W / m2-oC , Q = 2111 W

Assignment 1
A long 10-cm-diameter steam pipe whose
external surface temperature is 110°C passes
through some open area that is not protected
against the winds (Fig. 7–23). Determine the
rate of heat loss from the pipe per unit of its
length when the air is at 1 atm pressure and
10°C and the wind is blowing across the pipe
at a velocity of 8 m/s.
Assignment 2
A 25-cm-diameter stainless steel ball ( 8055
kg/m3, Cp 480 J/kg · °C) is removed from the
oven at a uniform temperature of 300°C. The
ball is then subjected to the flow of air at 1
atm pressure and 25°C with a velocity of 3
m/s. The surface temperature of the ball
eventually drops to 200°C. Determine the
average convection heat transfer coefficient
during this cooling process and estimate how
long the process will take.
