CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

 Introduction

The travel and tourism industry is a huge part of our

economy” according to Karen Hughes. All sectors of the
economy play an important role in making a stable and a
long running development. Tourism is one of the sectors
which is essential in economic development, it’s now one
of the world’s largest industries and one of its fastest
growing economic sector (Ashley et al., 2007)
 Statement of the Problem

The study aims to know the Role of Tourism on the Economic

Development of Southern Leyte. It also targets to answer the following
questions.

1. The socio-demographic profile of the participants in terms of:

1.4 Year and Section
2. What are the contribution of tourism industry to the economic
development of Southern Leyte?

3. What strategies to be use to maximize the tourism industry in

Southern Leyte?

4. What is the current situation of Southern Leyte’s tourism industry ?

5.How to sustain tourism in Southern Leyte ?

 Significance of the Study

The Local Government Unit of Southern Leyte, for they will know,
be reminded and be more aware to the current situation of Southern
Leyte’s tourism industry, how tourism plays an important role in the
province and ways to stimulate the province economic growth.

The local community, in a way that they will know how important
tourism industry in our economic development today.
The investors, they will know what Southern Leyte can offer in
terms of businesses involving the tourism industry.

The future researchers, this paper will surely be a great help to

them, especially those who will conduct studies on the same field for
they will gain insights from the fundamentals of this investigation.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses only on the Senior High School grade 12

Tourism-A students of Southern Leyte State University- Main
Campus.
The research sample is composed of twenty (20) students that
were picked through convenience sampling. The primary data
gathering method is through a questionnaire.
The study will be conducted in the school year 2018-2019. Any
changes or progress in details and updated information beyond
the said point are not covered by the framework of this study.

Hypothesis

 H0 Null Hypothesis - Tourism industry gives no economic

benefit in the province of Southern Leyte.
 H1 Alternative Hypothesis - Tourism industry gives economic
benefit in the province of Southern Leyte.
 Definition of Terms

 Tourism - is the act of traveling and staying in a place outside an

individual's usual environment for a duration of less than one year
for any purpose, including, leisure, business, and education
(Carrigan,2011).
 Tourism Industry - includes all the businesses responsible for
attracting tourists to the destinations and managing the tours. It
also includes the auxiliary businesses that directly or indirectly
facilitate the tourists' transport and accommodations (Carrigan,
2011).
 Development – is a process that enables the growth or evolution
of an entity or a concept.
 Economic development - is defined as the conscious efforts
taken in order to improve the economic condition of a community
by creating job opportunities, which ultimately results in financial
well-being and better quality of life (Blair & Carroll, 2008).

 Tourism development – is defined as the policies that attract

tourists, allow and facilitate the tourism industry to grow while
minimizing its negative impacts on the society and environment
(Sharpley, 2009)
CHAPTER III

Methodology
 Research Design

The research problems presented was answered through

descriptive research design. This design enables the
researchers to meet the objectives of the study. (Slaunder et al.,
2003) defines descriptive research design as one which looks
with intense accuracy at the phenomena and describes precisely
what the researcher sees. In addition this design is a purposive
process of data gathering, analyzing, classifying and tabulating
data about prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs, processes,
trends and cause-effect relationships and then adequate and
accurate interpretation about such data with or without aid of
statistical treatment.
 Research Participants

The participants of the study are composed of twenty (20) out of

thirty eight (38) Grade 11 Tourism A students from Senior High
School Department of Southern Leyte State University-Main
Campus. The researchers randomly picked twenty (20) students
from the said section. The method the researchers used, is
convenience sampling. This method is a non-probability sampling
that relies the data collection from population members who are
conveniently available to participate in the study. It is a type of
sampling where the first available primary data source will be used
for the research without additional requirements.
 Research Instrument

The main instrument that the researchers used is a self-made

questionnaire. It has two (2) parts, the first part is the participants
socio-demographic profile while the second part is the question
proper. The draft of the questionnaire was drawn out based in the
researchers readings, previous studies and professional literature
relevant to the study. Open ended options will be provided to
accommodate free formatted views related to the topic. Books
and the internet, this is where the researchers get information and
references needed in the study.
 Research Environment

Southern Leyte State University-Main Campus is a 12 hectare,

premier public university in the Philippines situated in between
Barangay Rizal and Barangay San Roque in the town of Sogod,
province of Southern Leyte.
Southern Leyte State University-Main Campus is where the
researchers conducted the study. The partakers of this study are the
students studying in Southern Leyte State University-Main Campus
who are from the Senior High School Department, Tourism-A 12.
 Data Gathering Procedure

First of all, the researchers asked permission to the principal of

Senior High School Department of Southern Leyte State University-
Main Campus. A letter of request was sent to him asking a consent
if the researchers can gather data and information in the said
premise.
After securing the said permit the researchers administered the
questionnaires to the participants, after giving them some
background information on the intentions of the researchers and
what is the study all about. The participants have given enough time
to complete their answer, while the researchers wait for them until
they are done. Afterwards the researchers analyzed the collected
data.
 Survey Report

This survey report outlines the results of a survey carried

out to determined the answers to the statement of the
problem in the study entitled “ The Role of Tourism on the
Economic Development of Southern Leyte”
Findings
Research Participants Age

 There are a total of twenty (20) participants from Grade

12 Tourism- A students of who cooperated in the study.
One (1) of them is sixteen (16) years old. Nine (9) of them
are eighteen (18) years old and another nine (9) of them
are seventeen (17) years old. The last one (1) is 19 years
old.
The Research Participants Gender

 With regards with the respondents sex, seventeen (17)

of them are female while the remaining three (3) are
male. The data revealed that the majority of the
participants from Tourism-A Senior High School
Department are female.

 All of the participants of the study are from Grade 12

Tourism-A students of Southern Leyte State
University- Main Campus
 Research Question 1. Could you describe the
current situation of Southern Leyte’s tourism
industry ?

- Large majorities of the participants said that tourism

industry in Southern Leyte is in the process of
development, it is now slowly improving and boosting.
Research Question 2. What do you think are
the contribution of tourism industry on the
economic development of Southern Leyte ?

- The results shows that tourism industry in Southern Leyte gives

employment opportunities and helps Southern Leyteño have
extra income in the form of businesses. It also helps the Local
Government of Southern Leyte by generating tax revenue.
Research Question 3. How can tourism
industry lessen poverty in Southern Leyte ?

- Majority of the participants responded simply, “ it give

jobs and increases income”
Research Question 4. What is the role of the
government in sustaining the tourism industry
in Southern Leyte ?

- A large proportion of the people who answered the

questionnaire said that government is one of the backbone
of tourism industry. Its role is to support and plan strategies
to develop tourism destinations and potential tourism
destinations.
 Research Question 5. You as a part of the
local community, in what way can you help in
sustaining the tourism industry in Southern
Leyte ?

- Of the twenty (20) Grade 12 Tourism- A students, sixteen (16) of

them answered that they can help sustain tourism industry in
Southern Leyte by promoting the destination through positive word
of mouth to friends and colleagues and by posting in social media
what Southern Leyte can offer. While, four (4) of them said that they
will be responsible enough by keeping a tourist destination clean,
especially when they pay them a visit.
Research Question 6. What can you recommend
to maximize the tourism industry in Southern
Leyte ?

- Majority of the participants recommend that the government and

the local residents of Southern Leyte should promote the
Southern Leyte’s tourism destinations more to make it well-known.
Minority of the participants said that the Department of Tourism of
Southern Leyte should be more determined on improving and
maintaining each tourist destination
 Conclusion

The tourism industry of Southern Leyte is doing well and

contribute things that is beneficial to the residents of
Southern Leyte like employment, increase in income and
generates more tax revenue. It helps lessen poverty by
giving jobs to local residents who needs it. The local
government and the people of Southern Leyte have crucial
role in sustaining tourism industry in the province, the
government and the local residents should promote the
tourist destination more.
 The Department of Tourism in Southern Leyte should develop
more strategies and ways to improve tourism in Southern Leyte. On
the other hand, the populate of Southern Leyte and other tourist
should be more responsible when visiting a tourist destination by
making it clean.
On the basis of this findings, it indicates that tourism industry in
Southern Leyte truly gives good economic benefit in the province. It
supports the alternative hypothesis of the study.
