Managing Change in the Workplace

Managing change means working closely with employees and setting clear goals
about how the change will be managed.

Ways to manage change in the workplace-

 Maintain a positive attitude
 Recognize that change is constant
 Learn new skills
 Ask as many questions as possible
Self Managed Teams

 A self-organized, semi autonomous small group of employees whose members

determine, plan, and manage their day-to-day activities and duties under
reduced or no supervision. Also called self directed team.

 A self-managed team is a group of employees that is responsible for all

aspects of producing a product or delivering a service.
Benefits

 Flexibility: Self managed teams give more and improved flexibility of staff.
 Efficient operations: More efficient operations take place reduced number
of job classification.
 Lower absenteeism: Organizations having self-managed teams experience
lower absenteeism and turnover rates.
 High commitment: Self-managed teams gain high level of commitment.
 Minimum supervision: With minimum supervision organization can get better
result and output.
Leading a Self Managed Team

 Self-managed teams are autonomous in terms of how they manage and carry
out their work, they still require guidance from leaders within the
organizational hierarchy.
 External leaders provide the link between the wider organization and the
self-managed team, empowering the team and advocating on its behalf.
 External leaders may struggle to find the appropriate balance in their
leadership style.
Team Dynamics

 A team can be defined as two or more people working together to

interdependently to meet a specific goal or purpose. Outside of this, a team
can be for the long term or come together for a few hours.

 Group dynamics can be understood as how team member’s distinct roles and

behaviour impact other group members and the group as a whole.
Creating Positive Group Dynamics

 A team with positive group dynamics tend to have team members who trust
each other. They can work towards collective decisions and they are held
accountable for outcomes.
 A team with good group dynamics may be constructive and productive and it
may demonstrate mutual understanding.
 On the other hand, poor group dynamics can be disruptive for successful
decision making and work outcomes.
 Group dynamics matter because they impact things like creativity,
productivity and effectiveness.
What Causes Poor Group Dynamics?

 Weak leadership: When a team lacks a strong leader, a more dominant member
of the group can often take charge which leads to a lack of direction, infighting,
or a focus on the wrong priorities.

 Excessive deference to authority: This can happen when people want to be seen
to agree with a leader, and therefore hold back from expressing their own
opinions.

 Blocking: This happens when team members behave in a way that disrupts the
flow of information in the group.

 Free riding: Free riders may work hard on their own, but limit their contributions in
group situations. This is known as "social loafing."
Strategies for Improving Team Dynamics

 Know your Team- Observe your team at work and conduct individual
interviews in a private, safe and confidential space, to find out as much as
you can about your team’s problems.

 Tackle Problems Quickly- If you notice that one member of your team has
adopted a behaviour that's affecting the group unhelpfully, act quickly to
challenge it.

 Create a Team Charter- If you create a team charter and offer clearly
defined roles, you could motivate team members to address their
responsibilities and work together more effectively.
Strategies Continued..

 Enhance Team Culture- Use team-building exercises to encourage stronger

relationships between individual team members.

 Build Communication- Give your team tools to drive open communication and
encourage team members to communicate clearly to each other.

 Always Pay Attention- You should always pay attention to your team and know
what is going on. Look out for unacceptable behaviours such as
bullying, groupthink and freeriding so you are ready to address them right
away.
