SIMPLE PAST TENSE
Simple Past Tense is the sentence tenses that are used to express
events that occur in the past. It is different from past continuous tense,
which states the events that happened in the past, but still occur in the
present.
Simple Past Tense
To form simple past tense sentences, the formula is as follows.
S + Verb 2 + O
In simple past tense sentences, the verb used is the second from of the
verb. There are 2 types of verbs, namely regular verb and irregular verb.
For the regular verb, add –ed/-d behind after the first verb.
Examples of simple sentences past positive tense
To form simple sentences, past positive tense, the formula is as follows :
S + Verb 2
or
S + Was/Were

Examples of simple sentences past negative tense
To form simple sentences, past negative tense, the formula is as follows :
s + did + not + verb 1
or
s + to be (was/were) + not
(-) The teacher didn’t come
Examples of simple sentences past interrogative tense
To form simple sentences, past interrogative tense, the formula is as
follows :
be (was/were) + S + present participle (v-ing) + O?
(?) Was he coming to my house?
Past Continuous Tense
Past continuous tense is a phrase that functions to
describe events that have occurred and still occur, or events
that occur at the same time.
This form of tense is an expression that serves to express
an event or action that is going on in the past when another
event occurs or another action is being carried out.
The past continuous tense formula is formed by the past
form from to be (was/were) + Present Participle (V-1 + ing).
Examples of positive past continuous tense sentences
To form a positive continuous tense sentence, the formula is as follows :
S + be (was/were) + Present Participle (V-ing) + O
(+) He was coming to my house

Examples of negative past continuous tense sentences


To form a negative continuous tense sentence, the formula is as follows
:
S + be (was/were) + not + Present Participle (V-ing) + O
(-) He was not coming to my house
Examples of interrogative past continuous tense sentences
To form a interrogative continuous tense sentence, the formula is as
follows :
be (was/were) + S + Present Participle (V-ing) + O?
(?) Was he coming to my house?
Conclusion
The past continuous tense sentence form has a function to
express an event or action that is taking place in the past that is formed
by the past tense from the present participle (was/were) + (V-1 + ing).
Past continuous tense has four functions in expressing an event or
circumstance with characteristic traits always using to be
“present/was” + Present participle.
